THE ROAMING LANDSCAPE
(THEATRE)

10:00am - 11:00amIn Search of Standards
There is broad industry consensus that no-hassle roaming will transform Wi-Fi from a 'promising' technology into a dominant telecommunications force. Expeditious establishment of industry standards for roaming would undoubtedly hasten this outcome.
But who should set standards? Who do standards serve? Will the interests of the public receive real consideration? This session will discuss/debate these issues, and more

Peter Murray, President, Gemtek Systems, Inc.
Speakers:
Phil Belanger, VP of Marketing, Vivato Networks, Chairman, PassOne
Blair Bullock, Network Architect, iPass Inc.

11:30am - 12:30pmOperations Support Systems For Roaming
Beneath the surface of the seamless, connection-wherever-you-go service that users crave is a lot of plumbing. Roaming entails secure, bulletproof authentication, billing and settlement tracking, robust data security and more - scaled up to millions of users.
This session dissects today's hardware/software systems and glimpses into the future, where we'll truly be able to find a connection wherever we find ourselves.

1:30pm - 2:20pmAfternoon Keynote - Roadmap: The Route To Ubiquity
Despite the incredible promise of Wi-Fi as a network access tool for everybody - and the remarkable explosion of enterprise deployments and commercial 802.11 hotspots that's already occurred - the technology still faces roadblocks on its path to ubiquity. Sky Dayton will talk about how we get from here to there as an industry; he will provide a model for competition and collaboration amongst the many companies and entrepreneurs crowding into what looks like the next gold rush.

Speaker:
Sky Dayton, Founder and CEO, Boingo Wireless

2:30pm - 3:30pmIntegrating Smaller WISPs into Larger Networks
Big WISP aggregators want more customers, but don't have many locations. End-user customers want more locations for wireless access before they'll sign up for a subscription. This is the Wireless ISP chicken-and-the-egg problem. However, small, local WISPs and mom-and-pop hotspot operators want more customers, too -- people who will buy their coffee or food or use their hotel rooms or lounges. The trick is bringing these small venues on board as nodes of a much larger wireless network.
In this session, aggregators and WISPs discuss the whys and wherefores of building a nationwide access network.

Moderator:
Tim Sanders, Founder, The Final Mile
Speakers:
Alan Gale, Founder & CEO, Deep Blue Wireless
Colby Goff, Vice President Network Strategy, Boingo Wireless
Jon Russo, VP of Marketing, iPass

3:30pm - 4:00pmAfternoon Break

4:00pm - 5:00pmRoaming Between 802.11 and Cellular Networks
In a world in which we're increasingly likely to be carrying a pocketable multifunction computing/communications device equipped to connect to both mobile and fixed wireless networks, what are the prospects for easy - even seamless - roaming between the two? There's general agreement that this will come, but how close are we today? How will things mesh on the business end? Our panel of experts represents companies that are busy solving pieces of the larger puzzle. They fill us in on the state of the art.

11:30am - 12:30pmLeveraging an 802.11 Backbone: Manufacturing & Distribution
As wireless LANs make their way onto factory floors, maintenance facilities, warehouses, and other industrial settings, they are quietly revolutionizing the way work gets done and bringing new levels of efficiency and cost effectiveness to business. Handheld devices of all kinds are capturing and moving data into every part of the workplace. Companion technologies such as barcoding and RF ID tagging — tied together by wireless networks — are helping keep track of the whereabouts and movement of valuable assets. Instant access to corporate data banks from just about anywhere in the physical plant is helping workers get their jobs done more quickly and more accurately. This session looks at some notable industrial installations and discusses the resulting bottom-line gains.

2:30pm - 3:30pmLeveraging an 802.11 Backbone: Healthcare
The wave of the future in the multi-billion-dollar healthcare industry is radio waves — 802.11 wireless networks, to be specific. The 1996 Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is driving massive changes in communications and other operational systems in clinics, labs, and hospitals. Perhaps most important, as care facilities move to replace traditional paper records with Electronic Medical Records, doctors and nurses can now access those records instantaneously whenever and wherever they're needed. Mobile workers stay connected to the network as they move through their rounds, without having to log on and off of multiple computers. Improvements in billing, prescription ordering, and even telephony also flow from WLAN use in healthcare operations. Keeping track of vital and costly medical equipment is another important job 802.11 backbones handle, with some help from companion technologies like RF ID tags. In this session, equipment vendors, operations mangers, and consultants explore the state of the art.

4:00pm - 5:00pmLeveraging an 802.11 Backbone: Education
Educational institutions have always been on the forefront of computing technology, so it's not a surprise that colleges and universities are leading the way in 802.11 technologies -- and applying them on a large scale in the real world. Issues like large-scale wireless networking, security, roaming and distributed applications are already being addressed in the educational realm. In this session, both university administrators and vendors address the innovations in education that will soon make their way to the marketplace.
