THE ROAMING LANDSCAPE

10:00am - 11:00am Wi-Fi Strategies for Telcos
Industry leaders have long speculated about the policies that cellular carriers would adopt with respect to wireless LANs. Now, with the announcements this summer from Verizon, SBC and others, we know. Or do we? That carriers mean to be players in this market is clear, but to what extent and for what purpose? How will their Wi-Fi offerings jibe with their cellular data services? Come to this session for a deeper look into the future of Wi-Fi, Telco style.

11:30am - 12:30pm Building Vendor-Neutral Roaming Organizations
The concept of roaming grew up in the cellular phone industry – tortuously, over a period of ten years. It was adopted and adapted successfully for the dialup Internet access industry in the 1990s. Despite lots of talk about it in the Wi-Fi world, however, true roaming—based on a confederation of independent providers employing a registry, a common OSS, and a settlement system—has only very recently begun to appear. Participants discuss the process and the prospects for Wi-Fi roaming worldwide.

3:30pm - 4:00pm Afternoon Break

4:00pm - 5:00pm Economics of WLAN Deployment
Part 1. As has been frequently pointed out, wireless LAN technology isn't wireless. Until recently, deploying an access point required pulling cable – both Ethernet and power – to the location, an expensive proposition. The introduction of Power over Ethernet (PoE), four years ago, began to reduce these costs. The official ratification of the IEEE standard this summer should eliminate proprietary differences among vendors' offerings and make PoE a powerful force in the industry. This session covers the state of the art.
Speaker:
Michael Petagna, Director, WLAN Business Development, PowerDsine, LTD.

Part 2. Despite many obvious benefits, not every enterprise has the resources—or wants to develop the resources—to design, deploy, and manage a wireless LAN. Until recently, that meant doing without. But Wi-Fi is now well enough established that managed WLAN services are springing up to complement the many other types of managed, outsourced networking services available. This session takes a look at what it takes to establish a profitable managed Wi-Fi business.
Speaker:
Paraham Momtahan, Vice President, Research and Development, Bridgewater Systems

TRACK C
DEPLOYING WLANS 2

10:00am - 11:00am Integrating Wireless & Wired LANs
LAN Management is a tried and true necessity in any corporate structure, but the introduction of wireless in the early days sometime lead to a Wild West mentality with outlaw (read: rogue) access points and users at war with the IT sheriffs. Those days are gone, as the tools are more than readily available for carefully making wireless a part of any existing Ethernet infrastructure. We'll talk with the companies making these tools, from the switch vendors to the management console developers, to learn the secrets of making this seamless for users and painless for the IT staff.
Moderator:
Eric Griffith, Managing Editor, Wi-Fi Planet
Speakers:
Anthony Bartolo, Director of Product Marketing, Wireless LAN Solutions, Nortel Networks

11:00am - 11:30am Morning Break
11:30am - 12:30pm State-of-the Art Hand-off Technologies
True wireless roaming will only happen when clients can travel across completely disparate networks. More than just subnet roaming, to go from a Wi-Fi LAN and to a 3G WAN and continue talking or accessing data securely is what's needed: and a plethora of solutions are in the works to make this hand-off happen. Technologies like Mobile IP, which uses multiple IP addresses to keep you connected, are just the beginning as small and large companies (Intel, anyone?) take on the task. Find out what you need to make sure your users can make the leap from network to network without hassling you.

Kevin Duffy, Senior Vice President of Product Management and R&D, Proxim

2:30pm - 3:30pm Wi-Fi Meets 3G
Cellular technologies are fast moving from looking like potential competitors to Wi-Fi to being viewed as the helpful older sibling. As the networks in the home and office continue to converge with the WAN outdoors, clever use of 3G technology and some interesting antenna tricks are making it easier for everyone to get connected no matter where they are. Take a look at some of the coolest technology in wireless today that combines the two, from cellular-as-backhaul solutions to building antenna systems that provide both GSM and Wi-Fi at the same time, and more.

4:00pm - 5:00pm RF Management Implementation Strategies
The term RF management really describes three things: the management of RF frequencies, security applications, and planning of wireless LANs. Strategies for achieving these goals are as different as the many vendors of hardware and software offerings designed to achieve them. Some offer dedicated RF management hardware, others balk at using such equipment; still others suggest RF management is a bandaid solution for a first-generation WLAN architecture. Four players in attendance will discuss different philosophies and strategies surrounding RF management implementations.
