Vipin Jain is vice president, LAN Access for Extreme Networks, Inc. a global networking infrastructure company that offers a simplified approach to networking based on powerful Ethernet/IP solutions. Jain is responsible for the Company's Unified Access Architecture, a unique approach for seamless integration of wireless and wired data networking for the medium and large enterprise. Jain is a well-known figure in the data communications industry. He is the inventor of IEEE 802.1x, the authentication protocol in wireline and wireless Ethernet.
Jain was also a key participant in the development of the IEEE's standards for Prioritization and VLAN -- 802.1p and 802.1q. In addition, he has more then 20 patents (granted and applied) for a variety of Ethernet switching products. Jain was a co-founder of Telseon, a pioneer in Metro Ethernet network technology. Jain was responsible for all engineering and network architecture activities for Telseon. Telseon achieved notoriety for deploying Ethernet fiber networks in more than 20 metropolitan areas in the U.S. in less than one year; the Company was sold to OnFiber in 2002.
