Agenda* - Day 1 (Workshops) Tuesday November 5, 2002
|
|---|
Workshop Day 1 consists of two tracks - attendees may choose to attend sessions from any track Click on the track that interests you, or scroll down to see all tracks: Public Hotspot Business Challenges CTO Workshop: 802.11 Installations
| | | 08.00 - 09.00 | Registration
| | Public Hotspot Business Challenges Moderated by: Magnus Melander, Partner, Brainheart Capital
|
|---|
| 09.00 - 11.00 | Public Hotspots: Evolving A Viable Business Model Public hotspot providers definitely helped put WLANs on the map, with Wi-Fi service in hotels, airports and restaurants seeming to point to an entirely new dimension of business and leisure connectivity. How to build the networks, how to price the services and where to be located are among the still unresolved issues at the core of how to make money at this game. Leading providers will talk about what they've learned and where they're headed. Andrew Ferrier, Megabeam Dr. Klaus-D. Kohrt, Vice President, Strategic Product Management Networks and Services, Siemens AG Erwin Lautwein, Manager of Business Development, Cisco Systems GmbH, Düsseldorf Dipl.-Ing. Harald Schnetzer, metronet copper optics GmbH
| | | 11.00 - 11.30 | Morning Break
| | | 11.30 - 13.00 | Generation 2 Business Models: Case Studies From Europe & North America Sweden has what amounts to a national system of publicly available 802.11 LAN nodes, populating travel centers (bus and train terminals, airports), hotels, business centers - even turnpike restaurants. It's the brainchild of telephone provider Telia. In North America, however, problems of scale make the challenge of building a national network far greater. Newcomer Boingo Wireless has an approach that shows promise: create a one-stop-shopping system that locates (via proprietary software) and ties together (through billing and authentication) networks owned and operated by third parties. Attendees will hear in-depth discussion of what works, what doesn't, and what challenges still face those who set out to offer ubiquitous public access. Robert Lang, Managing Director, WLAN GmbH Björn Thorngren, Researcher, Brainheart Capital Carsten Otto, Product Manager Non Voice Access Products, T-Mobile International AG
| | | 13.00 - 14.30 | Lunch Break
| | | 14.30 - 16.00 | Billing, Roaming & Location-based Services The user is looking for seamless handoff from one hotspot and network to another, integrated billing across wireless networks, standard login and configuration and the ability to access the same services everywhere - in short, one network. This session explores the steps being taken in billing and authentication to bring this to reality and some of the challenges to be overcome. Dr. Manfred Buchholz, Sales Manager, M3-Connect GmbH Mike Moore, Director of Business Development, iPass Mikko Riepula, Managing Director, WiFicom
| | | 16.00 - 16.30 | Afternoon Break
| | | 16.30 - 17.30 | Advances in Infrastructure and Technology - Implications for Business Models Mesh networks and multi-hopping to reach distant users and extend coverage, advances to the 802.11 standard, the marriage of 802.11 with telecommunications devices and consumer electronics - all these are happening now. Take a look at developments in the near future that could impact current business plans. Hans van der Hoek, CEO, Gemtek Systems Biju Nair, VP Product Development, PCTEL
| | | 17.30 - 19.00 | Networking Cocktail Reception

CTO Workshop: 802.11 Installations Moderated by: Dr. Harald B. Karcher
|
|---|
| 09.00 - 10.00 | 802.11 Standards - Data Rates and Other Key Differences 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g (not to mention e, f and h), the standards keep coming. What are the critical differences between them that are relevant for planning your implementation? One of the key issues is data rates and upcoming security changes - do you need 54Mbps or is 11Mbps perfectly adequate? This session provides an overview of existing 802.11 standards, their key differences and benefits, examines what is in the pipeline and provides a practical guide to decision making. Mario Rieth, Sales Director D/A/CH, Proxim
| | | 10.00 - 11.00 | RF Site Survey Basics: Equipment and Techniques for Maximizing WLAN Performance As you plan your 802.11 network, you'll want to prepare a site survey to identify potential problem spots and address them before the implementation stage. This session covers the ins and outs of a site survey, with the following steps explicitly covered: 1. RF site survey objectives, including the assessment of RF propagation issues, determining location and estimating the number of access points. 2. Addressing RF propagation issues. 3. Assessing site-survey tools. 4. Site survey steps. 5. Potential impact on system design (including the selection of 802.11b vs. 802.11a, channel assignments, etc.). ARtem GmbH prefer to not make this presentation available. Roland Schimpf, Account Consultant, ARtem GmbH
| | | 11.00 - 11.30 | Morning Break
| | | 11.30 - 13.00 | Site Surveys 2: Case Studies and 802.11a Specific Issues Real world case studies from site surveys in automobile factories, exhibition centers and public hotspots will be presented by one speaker. The second will deal in detail with the specific challenges presented by 5 GHz wireless LAN products. These offer advantages like more bandwidth, much better scalability and a clear frequency spectrum, but there is a known disadvantage discussed inside the community - the short range. Again, case studies of site surveys for an existing office environment will show the real difference between 802.11a and 802.11b. These practical tests with today's products provide valuable support for the decisions to be made in 2003, when even in Germany the usage of 5 GHz products will start to become legal. René Kriedemann, Second Wave WLAN Consulting Bernd Steinkuehler, CEO, X2.internet GmbH
| | | 13.00 - 14.30 | Lunch Break
| | | 14.30 - 16.00 | 802.11 Security: The Loopholes & The Patches Learn how to protect your WLAN by seeing security technologies and best practices in action. Through a combination of presentations and live demonstrations, our team of experts will illustrate 802.11 vulnerabilities and counter-measures that can be used to neutralize them. See what attackers can gain by capturing your WLAN traffic. Learn how analyzers, scanners and intrusion detection systems can be used to assess your own WLAN vulnerabilities. Get a better handle on the protection offered by 802.11 access points by seeing what really happens when basic and advanced counter-measures are enabled. Thomas Boele, Senior Network Consultant/Business Development, 3COM
| | | 16.00 - 16.30 | Afternoon Break
| | | 16.30 - 17.30 | Inside 802.11b Test Equipment Understanding 802.11b test equipment and the measurements they make is key to diagnosing and resolving WLAN problems. This workshop will examine critical 802.11b test tool architectures and the measurements they make. It will also explore important measurement techniques for 802.11b signals and interference (including basic pitfalls to avoid), and will offer a live demonstration of wireless network analysers. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions. Peter Schmitz, Network Associates GmbH
| | | 17.30 - 19.00 | Networking Cocktail Reception
