Public Access WLAN in Europe - An Overview
This session sets the stage for the coming days' discussions, providing an overview of current public access WLAN penetration in Europe, identifying existing players and coverage. Discover how many hotspots exist in Europe, where they are, and who owns them.
Speaker:
Michael Gebert, Editor, WLAN Report
|
| 09:30 - 11:00 |
The European WISP Landscape - Consolidation already?
Following a rapid expansion in the number of hotspot players in 2002 there has been a burst of consolidation in 2003 as larger incumbent telecoms companies enter the market. Does this signal the beginning of the end of the hotspot opportunity or is it in fact confirmation of a healthy market? Our panel discuss this point, the likely future structure of the market and identify still existing opportunities in the public access arena.
Facilitator:
Michael Mandahl, Brainheart Capital
Speakers:
Clive Mayhew-Begg, CEO, MyZones
Adrian Drury, Senior Analyst, ARCchart
Mikko Riepula, CEO, WiFicom

Aggregators in Europe - Is there room?
A seamless WLAN footprint from Ireland to Russia is some way off, but aggregators have been the pursuing the dream, attempting to link up independent hotspot owners. However as European Telcos are becoming more aggressive in the WLAN market, even acquiring some independent Hotpot providers, do the aggregators risk being squashed by a Telco-owned cross-border roaming footprint similar to that in the mobile industry? An issue of key importance not only for aggregators but for local WISPs, independent hotspot owners and end-user customers, all of whom want more locations for wireless access in order to drive take-up.

Anurag Lal, VP of Business Development, iPass
Mike Smart, Vice President, Product Management and Engineering, GRIC

Roaming - across providers and technology platforms - WLAN, GPRS, GSM
In a world in which we're increasingly likely to be carrying a pocketable multifunction computing/communications device equipped to connect to both mobile and fixed wireless networks, what are the prospects for easy - even seamless - roaming between the two? There's general agreement that this will come, but how close are we today? How will things mesh on the business end? Our panel of experts represents companies that are busy solving pieces of the larger puzzle. They fill us in on the state of the art.
Speakers:
Massimo Fatato, Managing Director EMEA, Gemtek Systems
Ognjen Redzic, Director of Business Development, PCTEL
Maurits van Rijckevorsel, Head of Sales and Marketing, Excilan

Billing Challenges and Solutions for Public Access
As the business model for public access is still evolving billing systems for WLAN must offer flexibility of pricing options and subscriber packages and the ability to integrate with existing billing systems. Revenue sharing with partners and roaming across networks also need to be accommodated.
This session examines approaches to billing that integrate with already existing billing processes including EAP-SIM as the alternative to existing credit-card / one time contract / cash payment schemes. The user simply takes his SIM card for authentication and accounting takes place via his mobile phone billing.

Dr. Peter Grabienski, FAE Wireless LAN EMEA, Agere Systems

Using 802.1x Authentication To Block WLAN Intruders - How secure?
WLANs are getting more secure...or are they? In this session, we'll discuss how 802.1X/EAP, PEAP/TTLS, and the newly announced WPA initiative are not silver bullets. We'll share lessons learned from real-world WLAN environments on how enterprises are extending these emerging protocols through layered security approaches including access control and policy based management.

WLAN Security: Case Studies in Key Verticals
This presentation has three parts: 1. WLAN security: why is "blue collar" growing faster than "white collar"? This presentation goes into the wireless vulnerabilities in some key industry verticals and how they view WLAN security, with special focus on Retail, Government, Military, and Logistics. Also, the presenter will discuss why the 'blue collar' WLAN market is faster to take off now, thanks to stronger ROI justification. 2. An update on some of the latest security tools and techniques. Authentication and connectivity concepts; VPNs vs. 802.1X and other air-link encryption techniques, pros and cons; Session layer VPN vs. traditional IPSec VPNs, pros and cons. 3. Real life case studies: The presentation describes real-world customer cases: a Scandinavian national parliament, a major US retailer, a European defence contractor, and a part of the US military: what the challenges were and how wireless security was implemented.
