Healthcare: WLAN Innovations
In hospitals and clinics, data must be mobile -- which has lead to increased use of 802.11 technologies both on the hospital floor and the backroom office. This session covers how hospitals and clinics are implementing 802.11 solutions and how they are addressing the needs of patients (as in using 802.11 to move data closer to the patient), doctors/nurses (including access control and security) and back-office administrators, who must tie this data together in patient records.

Manufacturing & Distribution: Changing Workplace Dynamics
Local Area Networks form the communications backbone for many corporations. However, the wires can get in the way. Businesses in buildings with concrete walls or steel construction know how difficult it can be to wire an office. IT managers, especially those in manufacturing companies, seek a type of connection that allows users to carry a portable device and move from the business offices to the shop floor without losing network connections. In these situations, it's not enough that the workers are mobile: their data and their databases must also follow them. In this session, you'll see how manufacturers are addressing their mobility needs with 802.11 technologies.

Education: Unwiring Innovations
Educational institutions have always been on the forefront of computing technology, so it's not a surprise that colleges and universities are leading the way in 802.11 technologies -- and applying them on a large scale in the real world. Issues like large-scale wireless networking, security, roaming and distributed applications are already being addressed in the educational realm. In this session, both university administrators and vendors address the innovations in education that will soon make their way to the marketplace.

The 54Mbps Revolution: 802.11b vs.The Newcomers
Chipsets for 802.11a have been available long enough for early adopters to test the technology thoroughly. Hardware for 802.11g is closer to becoming a reality. Will these up-and-coming technologies render "classic" 802.11b an anachronism? Will the promise of "uncluttered" airwaves in the 5GHz spectrum rule the day? Or will the two - or three - technologies coexist comfortably for the foreseeable future? Leading chipmakers carry on the debate.

Smart Hardware: Where Does the Intelligence Belong?
The need for bulletproof security for wireless networks -
authentication, encryption, management - is a subject on which just about everybody agrees. There is far less agreement, however, on the question of how these security functions should be implemented and where they should reside in the network. Is the access point the proper device to handle these critical functions? Or should they be entrusted to a more centralized gateway, bridge, or firewall? Proponents of three different approaches will make their cases in this session.

Alphabet Soup: The Next Generation OSS for Wireless Data
The convergence of wireless and data offers new revenue opportunities for carriers during this time of slow economic growth and increased scrutiny of planned 2.5/3G network enhancements. New networks based on the IEEE 802.11 protocols are emerging and will play an important role in facilitating delivery of wireless data solutions in the near term. These new networks will co-exist with, and complement, 2.5/3G networks when they arrive. The key to unlocking the revenue potential of these networks is a solid OSS foundation. Learn what future the new 802.11 technology will bring, and the OSS requirements to make it reality.

State of Chip Technology
Chipsets for 2.4-GHz 802.11b WLANs are already fairly mature, with the
bulk of them coming from a small number of well-established vendors. Does
this mean that designs have stabilized, and evolution has run its course? No
way! The emerging IEEE standards (802.11a, and .11g) fighting it out in the
marketplace are giving fast-moving upstart companies a head start on
slower-moving incumbents. They hope to roll out products ahead of the
current market leaders and capture market share by offering cost and
performance advantages through the use of unconventional architectures,
higher levels of integration and alternate foundry processes. Three
young 'upstart' chipmakers discuss their respective technologies, what
market
forces shaped their decisions, and the design challenges they faced in
bringing their products to market.

Hardware Strategies For The Enterprise
We're now seeing the first 802.11a products reach the market and in the next year we'll see 802.11e products as well. How does the enterprise plan differ for the hardware standards, both on the user side and the access side? In this session, you'll get a roadmap of 802.11 standards planned for the near future and how your enterprise can plan accordingly.

Optimizing WLAN Coverage with High Performance Antennas
Developing WLAN devices which operate well in noisy environments and urban jungles can be a challenge. 802.11 devices lose 50-70% of their energy through inefficient antennas. Typical antennas are omni-directional and waste much of their energy in the wrong direction. Learn how to design optimized 802.11 devices through high performance antennas with directional shaping.

Unwiring Offices: Being Your Own WLAN Admin
Plugging an Apple Airport into an Ethernet network was, once upon a time, a fun little side project for LAN administrators who wanted to let the occasional PowerBook go wireless. Now, everyone from the CEO on down wants the freedom and flexibility that come with a wireless network connection. That means LAN administrators have a new set of skills to learn. This session gets to the heart of what it takes to effectively run an 802.11-based system - no matter how large or small.

Community Networks: Sharing Your Net Wealth
The one-to-many nature of WLAN has propelled 802.11 into the forefront of the community network movement. Putting up an access point and pointing an antenna toward a public area turns any broadband Internet connection into a common resource. But what does it take to bind individual efforts into a real community? Leaders of community networks in the San Francisco and New York areas will share their thoughts and experiences in this session.
