Morning Keynote There has been significant debate regarding whether deploying
Public-access networks can be profitable. In the process of these lively discussions, the industry has lost focus on the most important
aspect of building a profitable business - the customer or the mobile professional. All too often this simple concept is lost in network
rollouts, leaving behind a wake of frustrated customers and without them, the business model of network operators and manufacturers, those
behind the deployment, soon follows suit.
Joel Short will discuss the different tactics that should be implemented
for network operators, venue owners and hardware manufacturers to be profitable. Additionally, he will discuss how network operators and
hardware manufacturers will need to work together to achieve the ultimate goal, providing an easy and seamless connectivity for the customer.

The View from 100 Feet: Airport Hotspots
Airports are captive venues for business and leisure travelers, making them ideal hotspot locations. But terminals are also the workplace of millions of people and hundreds of companies, which have competing needs for wireless access. Learn from those who have negotiated and installed Wi-Fi hotspots how to reconcile the needs of airlines, municipal or port authorities, airport contractors, and travelers.

The State of 802.11g: Facts vs. FUD Now that the fiercely contested 802.11g specification is finalized (or will presumably have been by conference time), it remains only for the industry to begin the process of sorting sheer speculation and early rumor-mongering from observable, measurable facts about 54 mbps communications in the 2.4 GHz band. Proponents and opponents will have a chance to hash out all the issues including actual performance parameters, backwards-compatibility (with 11b), and other weighty matters. Special attention will be paid to any technical factors affecting interoperability and interference between different implementations of the early 802.11g spec.

Chen, Ph.D., Product Marketing & Program Manager, Wireless LAN Product Line, Marvell Technology Group Mike Hurlston, Director of Business Development, Broadcom Corporation Jim Zyren, Dir., Strategic Mktg., Wireless Networking Products Group, Intersil Corp.

Power Management: The Key to a Star Trek Future Given the plummeting price and size of 802.11 transceivers, it's not to hard to envision a near-future world populated by handheld, web-enabled communications devices that rival anything we see on the popular science fiction series, "Star Trek". Unfortunately, until we duplicate Scotty's "dilithium crystal" power source, batteries will be a major limiting factor in the size, range, and performance of our wireless devices. This session will explore the various design strategies that can be used to make the most of the extremely limited energy available in the small batteries found in PDAs, palmtop computers, cell phones, and other handheld devices. Topics will include; power efficient MAC and baseband architectures, high-efficency radios and PAs, power management software strategies, battery developments and more.

Moving Multimedia With WLANs
We're a long way off from 802.11e -- the proposed IEEE standard for Quality of Service (Qos) for video on a wireless LAN. In the meantime companies are constantly demonstrating products using wireless video and audio solutions ranging from 802.11a to Ultrawideband -- and no two solutions work together. 802.11e might solve that. Listen to the experts as they explain the current state of wireless multimedia, the potential solutions, and how it could change the future of the living room and conference room.

The Future of WLANs This panel session will explore the evolution of wireless LANs from their current horizontal and vertical market roles to the next generation of both enhanced performance and new functionality. We'll explore both new technologies and emerging applications for WLANs, which promise to become both ubiquitous and mission-critical.
While we can certainly expect ever-increasing improvements in throughput, we'll also examine new directions, including position/location tracking and monitoring, enhancements in security, global roaming, and the integration of other facilities services.

VoIP over Wi-Fi: What's legal, what's not, and why telephone companies don't like it.
Free business-grade telephony and VoIP long distance exchanges are definitely in the cards. This session will describe first commercial implementations of VoIP telephony over WiFi networks in large enterprises. It will cover the technology used, differences between private and public Wi-Fi interfaces pertaining to VoIP, and the challenges faced by handset vendors aiming at this niche. And it will provide perspective as to where the technology is taking this service set.

802.11 and the Law As an important communications technology, Wi-Fi is of course
subject to legal constraints. But given its newness – and its unique
combination of public and private constituencies – legal issues that
will govern its deployment and its integration with the established
telecom system are unfamiliar territory to all but a handful of
specialist experts. In this session, two attorney/experts will examine a
pair of emerging areas of concern – as well as answer your questions.
Part 1: The Ever-Evolving Regulatory Landscape Of the many areas of potential regulation, in which various
levels of government will be seeking to maintain stewardship of our
increasingly crowded airwaves, spectrum allocation and interference
issues are two that are undoubtedly destined for high-profile status.
This segment will explore current realities and future directions.
Speaker: Jacob Farber, Dickstein Shapiro Morin & Oshinsky LLP
Part 2: Dealing with the Property Owner Wi-Fi infrastructure, like other wireless or broadband
telecommunications equipment, often needs to use the property of someone
else, whether it's the public rights of way, light poles, rooftops,
ceilings, walls, or risers. Are there zoning, licensing or franchise
issues relating to the local government? What are the terms and
obligations of agreements or licenses with private property owners,
commercial and residential? What are the key regulatory issues?
Speaker: David E. Bronston, Wolf, Block, Schorr and Solis-Cohen LLP
