8:00am - 5:00pm Registration

9:00am - 9:50am Morning Keynote
There has been significant debate regarding whether deploying Public-access networks can be profitable. In the process of these lively discussions, the industry has lost focus on the most important aspect of building a profitable business - the customer or the mobile professional. All too often this simple concept is lost in network rollouts, leaving behind a wake of frustrated customers and without them, the business model of network operators and manufacturers, those behind the deployment, soon follows suit.

Joel Short will discuss the different tactics that should be implemented for network operators, venue owners and hardware manufacturers to be profitable. Additionally, he will discuss how network operators and hardware manufacturers will need to work together to achieve the ultimate goal, providing an easy and seamless connectivity for the customer.
Speaker:
Joel Short, Chief Technology Officer & Senior Vice President, Nomadix

TRACK A
HOTSPOT CENTRAL

10:00am - 11:00am Branding and Marketing Hotspot Services
It's no secret that Starbucks is unwiring its stores. The company was one of the first in the hotspot game, and Wi-Fi is already a part of the Starbucks brand. Is this just a way to get customers to buy a second cup of coffee and another scone? Or is there a deeper strategy at work here? In a very different type of branding effort, the Wi-Fi Alliance recently announced its Wi-Fi Zone initiative, designed as a quality assurance program for the general public. How will these campaigns affect the adoption of wireless public access?
Moderator:
Bob Ferrari, Managing Director, Convergence Ventures
Speakers:

11:00am - 11:30am Morning Break
11:30am - 12:30pm Will People Pay for Hotspot Service?
The concept of public access hotspots is almost as old as wireless LANs themselves. Pioneering providers were building far-flung networks in hotels and airports before most of us had even heard of 802.11. The rush to build hotspots hasn't abated much in the ensuing years, even though the notion that they were a path to riches has given way to a new popular wisdom that says "There's no money in it." Granting that public access may not be an automatic goldmine, the question Will the traveling business community pay reasonable amounts for the convenience of ubiquitous Internet? needs an answer. This session explores the issue in depth.

HARDWARE TRENDS

10:00am - 11:00am Balancing Act: Hardware Performance vs Equipment Cost
While low price may be what got WiFi products onto the shelves of high-volume retailers, performance will be what builds widespread consumer acceptance and brand loyalty. In this session, our panel of industry experts will identify the key performance issues that affect range, speed, and ability to function in challenging "real-world" environments. We'll then look at the various options available to optimize performance against the tight cost constraints that consumer electronics designers must face. Emphasis will be placed on creative strategies to get "the most bang for the buck" when selecting chip set architectures, antennas, and other elements of a Wi-Fi product.

11:00am - 11:30am Morning Break
11:30am - 12:30pm The State of 802.11g: Facts vs. FUD
Now that the fiercely contested 802.11g specification is finalized (or will presumably have been by conference time), it remains only for the industry to begin the process of sorting sheer speculation and early rumor-mongering from observable, measurable facts about 54 mbps communications in the 2.4 GHz band. Proponents and opponents will have a chance to hash out all the issues including actual performance parameters, backwards-compatibility (with 11b), and other weighty matters. Special attention will be paid to any technical factors affecting interoperability and interference between different implementations of the early 802.11g spec.

12:30pm - 1:30pm Lunch Break

1:30pm - 2:20pm Power Management: The Key to a Star Trek Future
Given the plummeting price and size of 802.11 transceivers, it's not to hard to envision a near-future world populated by handheld, web-enabled communications devices that rival anything we see on the popular science fiction series, "Star Trek". Unfortunately, until we duplicate Scotty's "dilithium crystal" power source, batteries will be a major limiting factor in the size, range, and performance of our wireless devices. This session will explore the various design strategies that can be used to make the most of the extremely limited energy available in the small batteries found in PDAs, palmtop computers, cell phones, and other handheld devices. Topics will include; power efficient MAC and baseband architectures, high-efficency radios and PAs, power management software strategies, battery developments and more.

2:20pm - 2:30pm Session Interval

2:30pm - 3:30pm Access Point & Base Station Design Issues
Access points form the heart of enterprise and public wireless infrastructures, while base stations primarily serve residential and home offices. Each device has its own unique set of technical demands placed upon it, many of which are of less importance for adapter cards and other terminal devices. In both cases however, the success of the wireless network depends largely on the unit's ability to perform well under heavy traffic loads, challenging real-world environments, and the ability to "play well" with any WiFi-approved terminal.

While this session will concentrate primarily on the design and management issues surrounding access points, many of the lessons learned here are equally applicable in the highly competitive and cost-conscious base station market. Participants in this session will explore how RF design, MAC implementation, software, and other architectural choices influence the performance and price of an access point. Panelists will also discuss the "thin AP vs. thick AP" debate, and look at how AP design can support good network layout and management practices.

3:30pm - 4:00pm Afternoon Break

4:00pm - 5:00pm Cutting Edge Antenna Design
The lowly antenna is the most neglected, but one of the most critical elements affecting the performance of a Wi-Fi product. A good antenna can add up to 6 dB to a receiver's sensitivity, and dramatically improve its performance under difficult multipath and fading conditions. This session will begin with a review of the fundamentals of antenna theory (basics for the uninitiated), and then look at how it applies to the specific issues faced by WLAN designers. The panelists will explore in detail how an equipment manufacturer can improve a product's performance with proper selection and implementation of an antenna. They will examine some recent, technically interesting designs, and cover issues relating to antenna selection and design in PCMCIA adapter cards, embedded modules, and base stations.

BUILDING THE NETWORK

10:00am - 11:00am 2.4 GHz or 5GHz? Strategies for Choosing The Right Spectrum
Numerous arguments exist in support of the well-established 802.11b and its hardware-compatible cousin 802.11g -- and equally numerous in support of incompatible 802.11a. Here's an in-depth discussion, mostly from a technical perspective, that should help those tasked with building a WLAN pick - and deploy - the solution that will best serve their needs in the long term.

2:30pm - 3:30pm New Architectures: Switched WLANs
For years the wired networking world has let the switch do the thinking. It kept track of the connections and the traffic. On the wireless LAN, however, it's taken multiple access points with no centralized management to get the same thing. However just as major enterprises have begun embracing 802.11, many vendors have taken it upon themselves to create a new method of Wi-Fi control: the WLAN switch. The question is: what constitutes a WLAN switch? We've asked the leaders in the field — each with their own special flavor of Wi-Fi switching — to tell us.

2:30pm - 3:30pm 802.11 and the Law
As an important communications technology, Wi-Fi is of course subject to legal constraints. But given its newness – and its unique combination of public and private constituencies – legal issues that will govern its deployment and its integration with the established telecom system are unfamiliar territory to all but a handful of specialist experts. In this session, two attorney/experts will examine a pair of emerging areas of concern – as well as answer your questions.

Part 1: The Ever-Evolving Regulatory Landscape
Of the many areas of potential regulation, in which various levels of government will be seeking to maintain stewardship of our increasingly crowded airwaves, spectrum allocation and interference issues are two that are undoubtedly destined for high-profile status. This segment will explore current realities and future directions.
Speaker:
Jacob Farber, Dickstein Shapiro Morin & Oshinsky LLP

Part 2: Dealing with the Property Owner
Wi-Fi infrastructure, like other wireless or broadband telecommunications equipment, often needs to use the property of someone else, whether it's the public rights of way, light poles, rooftops, ceilings, walls, or risers. Are there zoning, licensing or franchise issues relating to the local government? What are the terms and obligations of agreements or licenses with private property owners, commercial and residential? What are the key regulatory issues?
Speaker:
David E. Bronston, Wolf, Block, Schorr and Solis-Cohen LLP

3:30pm - 4:00pm Afternoon Break

4:00pm - 5:00pm The Location-Aware WLAN
Location-based services, generally thought to be the exclusive province of mobile wireless telephony, offer great application-enrichment possibilities to fixed wireless LANs as well.
