9:05am - 9:45am Keynote Address: Wi-Fi Alliance Industry Overview
The Wi-Fi Alliance is a non-profit international association formed in 1999 to certify interoperability of wireless Local Area Network products based on IEEE 802.11 specification. Currently the Wi-Fi Alliance has 183 member companies from around the world, and 741 products have received Wi-Fi® certification since certification began in March of 2000. The goal of the Wi-Fi Alliance's members is to enhance the user experience through product interoperability.

The Wi-Fi Alliance will give insights into the industry milestones in the last 12 months and what lies ahead. The Speaker will review some of the differences in Wi-Fi around the world and discuss current and emerging trends and how they will impact the market locally. Ongoing Wi-Fi Alliance initiatives.

Business Stream

11:00am - 11:45am Can 802.11 Become A Viable Last-Mile Alternative?
The "cheap and nasty" roots of 802.11 and the largely unregulated 2.4 Ghz spectrum is a double-edged sword. The infrastructure is amazingly cheap, but the chaotic nature of the technology mean that sound network design and co-operation need to be employed amongst carriers to make last mile wireless broadband provision a reality. In this session moderated by Niki Scevak, speakers will discuss the suitability and viability of using 802.11 as a last mile broadband technology.
Topics to be covered include:
  • Alternatives to 802.11
  • Regional and remote broadband provision
  • Regulation and the role of government
Moderator:
Niki Scevak, Senior Analyst, Jupiter Research
Panel Members:
Jason Ashton, Chairman, Big Air
Mark Feetham, Partner, Acuiti Legal
Boyd Murray, Telecommunications Research Engineer, CSIRO

11:45am - 12:30pm Business Mobility Leaders Industry Leaders Panel:
In what is set to be a major session of the 802.11 Planet conference, we put the leaders of the major Telcos head to head on the issue of business mobility. What is the business mobility market outlook? What is the relative share of Wi-Fi revenue and how is it expected to impact the bottom line of the major players? How serious are the Telco's about hotspots? In which technologies are the Telcos investing in over the next 12 months? What applications are going to be driving this market? Open Q&A.
Moderator:
Michael Walsh, Jupiter Research Australia
Panel Members:
Murray Bergin, Managing Director Mobile Sales and Solutions, Telstra
Peter Acheson, Director Business Mobile, Optus
12:30pm - 1:30pm Lunch Break
1:30pm - 2:00pm Special Afternoon Address
Speaker to be Announced

2:00pm - 2:45pm Afternoon Keynote Address: Secure WLANs - The Need for Strong Authentication and Credentials
Wi-Fi is an attractive technology for enterprises because it increases employee productivity and reduces networking costs. At the same time, the increased security risks relative to wireless LAN deployment require a buttoned up deployment strategy. This presentation looks at the security issues with regards to WLAN deployment, within Enterprises and for roaming scenarios. It then discusses the need for strong credentials that are portable and applicable in both on-campus and off-campus cases. The problem of Rogue Access Points in WLANs is also discussed, with some possible solutions being offered. Finally, Hardjono recommends that WLAN security solutions be thought of in the larger context of secure network access.
Speaker:
Thomas Hardjono, PhD., Principal Scientist, VeriSign

2:45pm - 3:30pm Will People Pay for Hotspot Services?
Despite great eagerness of many people to build hotspot networks, it's still unclear whether the general public - even the business community - is prepared to actually pay for nomadic wireless Internet service. Will people pay for connectivity? Will they pay for other services? Are there any business models that can clearly demonstrate profitability potential? Granting that public access may not be an automatic goldmine, the question Will the travelling business community pay reasonable amounts for the convenience of ubiquitous Internet?
This session will explore these issues plus:
  • Ultilisation of network and overcoming fixed costs
  • Importance of location
Moderator:
Michael Walsh, Jupiter Research Australia
Panel Members:
Mike Zimmerman, Principle Technology, Venture Partners
Michelle Neil, CEO, Airportal

3:30pm - 4:00pm Afternoon Break

4:00pm - 4:45pm The Location-Aware WLAN
Location-based services generally thought to be the exclusive province of mobile wireless telephony, offer great application-enrichment possibilities to fixed wireless LANs as well. With appropriate location technology, businesses and institutions can make information available on a where-needed basis. Location awareness can also be a key factor in WLAN security. This session focuses on emerging location-based applications for enterprises, government, and cultural organisations.
Moderator:
Michael Walsh, Jupiter Research Australia
Panel Members:
Antti Korhonen, President and CEO, Ekahau, Inc.
Michael Maggio, President and CEO, Newbury Networks

4:45pm - 6:00pm Cocktail Reception

11:00am - 11:45am Introduction to Wireless LANs and the IEEE 802.11 Standard
Looking for a solid introduction to the applications and technologies of wireless LANs? This workshop will explore everything you need to know to take advantage of WLANs today while planning for the next steps in the evolution of WLAN systems. The session will cover:
  • WLAN basics: motivations, justifications, applications and what users and network managers need to know about indoor radio communications
  • The IEEE 802.11 standard in detail, including both current specifications and major new additions now under development
  • Explanation of the IEEE's 'alphabet soup'
  • A review of current products, including devices (eg Centrino Laptops) PCMCIA clients, access points and software, along with a discussion of key features of each.
Speaker to be Announced

11:45am - 12:30pm Wireless LAN Design
If you're a wired LAN administrator or the technician tasked with implementing an 802.11 network in your workplace, this is the workshop for you. Focusing on the fundamental, practical problems involved in equipping and setting up a WLAN that works 'out of the box,' this session gives you the information you need to get it right the first time. Topics include:
  • Common problems and their solutions
  • Review of basic WLAN RF technology
  • Access Point and NIC critical features
  • Optimised WLAN design process
    1. What to cover?
    2. What tools do you need?
    3. How to save your budget and sanity
    4. Real-world design examples: Office, Campus, Warehouse

2:00pm - 2:45pm WLAN Security Basics
What security options are there for home, enterprise, and hotspot use? How do you set up a VPN on wireless LANs? This workshop is designed to give administrators of traditional and wireless LANs an overview of the security issues associated with WLANs and demonstrate basic and advanced tools and techniques to mitigate WLAN security risks. Attendees should have solid network administration experience and a basic working knowledge of WLANs. Prior security knowledge is not required Learn first-hand what common vulnerabilities like spoofing and eavesdropping really expose. Get a handle on less-publicised but equally worrisome threats like password capture and flood attacks. Instructors will use stumblers, analysers, and intrusion detection tools to illustrate risks and show how such tools can help you protect your own wireless network.

2:45pm - 3:30pm End-to-End Enterprise WLAN Security Implementation Using CCx and WPA
This workshop session demonstrates hands-on use of the security features needed to create a protected WLAN experience within the enterprise. Initial Wi-Fi Protected Access* (WPA) product certifications were announced by the Wi-Fi Alliance in May 2003 to bridge the gap between WEP and the coming 802.11i standard. This workshop will explain the usage and demonstrate the set-up of WPA in servers, access points and Intel® CentrinoTM mobile technology PC notebooks from OEMs. Cisco compatibility extensions (CCx) usage will also be reviewed. Pros and cons and set ups will be discussed and demonstrated for: 802.1x authentication platform EAP-TLS, EAP-TTLS, LEAP, PEAP, authentication types 802.11i (draft) standard update.
