WORKSHOP KEYNOTE

Richard B. Anderson
General Manager
IBM Global Digital Media Industry

8:00am - 5:00pm Registration

9:00am - 12:30pm DRM Introduction and Overview
Digital rights management (DRM) is a complex topic. As a field, DRM exists at the confluence of digital media technology, content business models, corporate information policies and intellectual property law. There is much hype and misconception about many aspects of DRM, yet a broad understanding of DRM is necessary not only for getting full value out of the Jupiter Digital Rights Management Strategies conference, but also for gaining insight into the future of networked digital media.

On Monday, October 25, we will present a 3-hour preconference workshop that provides an overview of DRM. This workshop is a version of which has already been given internally at leading media and technology companies. The presenter is Bill Rosenblatt, the conference chair for Jupiter Digital Rights Management Strategies Fall 2004. Bill is president of GiantSteps Media Technology Strategies, a management consultancy; managing editor of the Jupitermedia Web site and e-mail newsletter DRMWatch.com; and author of Digital Rights Management: Business and Technology (John Wiley, 2001) as well as several white papers on DRM.

The Overview of DRM Pre-Conference Workshop will cover these topics:

  • History and background of DRM
  • DRM-enabled content business models
  • DRM in the corporate enterprise: policy and regulatory compliance
  • DRM technology components: identity, authentication, encryption, watermarking, rights specifications and more
  • DRM standards initiatives: decoding the alphabet soup
  • Digital copyright law developments: principles, legislation and court cases
  • Key vendors and the state of DRM market development
  • Trends and predictions

Attendees will come away from this workshop with a solid understanding of what DRM is (and what it isn't), what it's good for in both media and corporate enterprise applications, how well it actually works, what companies are actually using it for, who the key players in the market are, and how the market is likely to develop in the foreseeable future.

Whether you have heard the term DRM and want to know what it all means, or whether you are already familiar with certain aspects of it and want to round out your knowledge, the Overview of DRM Workshop will satisfy your desire to reach beyond the hype into the substance of DRM.
    Presenter:
Bill Rosenblatt, President, GiantSteps Media Technology Strategies and Managing Editor, DRMWatch.com

  • 12:30pm - 1:30pm Lunch Break

    1:30pm - 4:00pm IBM Sponsored Workshop

1:30pm - 2:00pm Workshop Keynote: New Opportunities for Content and Ensuring Content Protection
Many current and evolving business models and usage cases may not always work well with traditional DRM implementations such as portable devices without IP connectivity, enforcing content protection in home entertainment networks or the ability for a given piece of content to be used across multiple devices with rights enforced. New developments in content protection specifically broadcast encryption, which builds on proven technologies, are emerging to meet these new needs and requirements. This session will describe the need, explain broadcast encryption as a content protection alternative and discuss one method being used to bring this alternative to market.
    Speaker:
Dick Anderson, General Manager, IBM Global Digital Media Industry

2:00pm - 3:00pm Technical Overview of Content Protection Alternatives to Traditional Digital Rights Management and Q&A
What is broadcast encryption? How does it work? How does it relate to CPPM (Content Protection Pre-Recorded Media and CPRM (Content Protection for Recordable Media)? What is xCP? How does it work?
    Speaker:
Dr. Stefan Nusser, Manager, Content Protection Competency Center, IBM Research

3:00pm - 3:45pm Bringing New Content Protection Methods to Market and What can Companies do to be Prepared
How will content protection technology come to market? This presentation will discuss successful models for bringing content protection technology to market. It will highlight the importance of licensing and the role licensing can play in bringing content protection technologies to market. In addition, this presentation will discuss how content protection fits in the digital media lifecycle and what companies can do today to take advantage of the new technologies to enable new and exciting entertainment business models.
    Speakers:
Janet Snowdon, Business Development Manager, IBM Media and Entertainment Industry
Richard Whittingon, Media & Entertainment Industry Partner, IBM Business Consulting Services
