Keynote Debate: Consumer-Friendly DRM: Oxymoron or Inevitability?
Is it possible to create a DRM scheme that is truly consumer-friendly? One that gives users a seamless, painless experience while protecting against abuse and compensates creators fairly? What are the technological, legal, and economic factors that bear on this issue? In our keynote debate, we feature Andy Moss, an architect of Microsoft's policies in this area, and Mike Godwin, the public-interest advocate and author of "What Every Citizen Should Know About DRM" and the book "Cyber Rights."

Bill Rosenblatt, President, GiantSteps Media Technology Strategies and Managing Editor, DRMWatch.com
Speakers:
Mike Godwin, Senior Technology Counsel, Public Knowledge
Andy Moss, Director of Technical Policy, Windows Division, Microsoft

Tech I: Digital Rights and Digital Identity: Separated at Birth?
Digital rights and digital identity are both essential components of digital content distribution models that are both robust and consumer-friendly. But instead of treating them as two aspects of the same issue, the market is virtually treating them as mutually exclusive. While DRM adoption continues to be stymied by lack of interoperability, the Digital Identity camp has been diligently hammering out protocol standards, with some promising early implementations of identity federation. What are some of the functional differences between DRM and DI systems, and what will it take for the twain to meet? We'll explore these issues in this session.

Tech II: Digital Watermarking Applications
Digital watermarking is increasingly being used for tracking and monitoring of music, movies, and television programs. Major music labels are using watermarking solutions for forensic tracking of pre-release music. Film studios have begun following suit, using forensic tracking based on watermarking for piracy deterrence in the Academy Award screener program. In broadcasting, watermarking-based monitoring systems are being deployed to track radio and TV programs and ads in major media markets around the world. In this session, learn how digital watermarking is becoming an essential ingredient of content management and emerging digital distribution strategies.

Tech III: MPEG-21 and OMA DRM Standards: Headed for a Showdown?
Of the several standards that are emerging in the DRM world, two in particular are developing significant momentum: The MPEG-21 Rights Expression Language is derived from ContentGuard's XrML, which is implemented in all of Microsoft's DRM technologies, while the Open Mobile Alliance DRM standard is being embraced by most of the leading mobile phone makers. As more and more devices go mobile, and as more mobile phones incorporate media players, will these two standards stacks clash? If so, is interoperability possible, or will users have to live in a Balkanized world? This panel features prime movers behind each of the two standards, who will discuss these issues.

Willms Buhse, Head of Products and Marketing, CoreMedia and Acting Chair, Download and DRM Working Group, Open Mobile Alliance
