What is Digital Rights Management?

In the pre-digital era, people's rights to do various things to or with content were limited mostly by the physical characteristics of the products containing the content, such as books, records, and videotapes. The networked digital age makes it possible to do just about anything to digital content, instantaneously and at virtually no cost. While this is a great opportunity for new content business models, it threatens the livelihood of content creators by making rampant piracy possible. Digital rights management (DRM) is a set of technologies that enable content owners to specify and control the access to content that they want to give consumers and the conditions under which they are given. Although originally intended to curb piracy and emulate traditional content distribution models in the digital domain, DRM is really an enabling technology for the content business models of the future.

While DRM came primarily out of the media industry, it is an increasingly important technology for protecting corporate information and complying with regulatory requirements in industries such as financial services, healthcare, and government, complementing existing security technologies such as firewalls, VPNs, and single sign-on authentication. DRM makes it possible to protect sensitive corporate information even when it is taken out of a file server or other repository.

In all, DRM is in the process of becoming part of the landscape of important network digital content access technologies - for virtually everyone.

What is the DRM Strategies Conference & Expo?

Jupitermedia's DRM Strategies Conference & Expo is the most comprehensive event ever that is solely focused on DRM in all of its manifestations, including both media/entertainment and corporate enterprise applications. The knowledge brought to the conference by DRM Watch and JupiterResearch will ensure that the DRM Strategies Conference & Expo will be an event of unprecedented depth and breadth.

DRM is a complex subject, so the conference will meet the needs of both newcomers who need to get up to speed and those of industry insiders wanting to hear about the latest developments. We've organized the conference into two parallel tracks:

  • The Media track focuses on DRM applications in media and entertainment markets, and the controversies surrounding DRM, consumers' rights, and copyright law. This track will feature panels on such niche markets as mobile devices, home networking, and nontraditional content business models, as well as technology discussions on issues like digital identity, standards, and watermarking applications.

  • The Enterprise track focuses on DRM technologies as applied to corporate information security and regulatory compliance issues. Panels in this track will include case studies from such vertical markets as financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, and commercial software. The track will also feature technical discussions on Enterprise DRM architectures and integrating DRM with enterprise security and content management.

Conference keynotes will feature big names in the industry discussing future trends in DRM and debating today's thorny issues of intellectual property online. And the Expo will showcase, under one roof for the first time ever, the most important DRM technology solutions available today.

Who Is Organizing the DRM Strategies Conference & Expo?

The Conference Chair is Bill Rosenblatt, president of GiantSteps Media Technology Strategies, a consulting firm, managing editor of the Jupitermedia newsletter DRM Watch, and author of the book Digital Rights Management: Business and Technology (John Wiley & Sons, 2001). Bill has been involved in the DRM market since its inception in the mid-1990s representing content providers, technology vendors, and standards committees. He has organized several DRM-related events and is one of the leading strategy consultants on DRM and other digital content technology issues.

The organization of DRM Strategies also benefits from the DRM Strategies Advisory Board, whose members' collective expertise is deep and spans a wide range of issues related to DRM:

Who Should Attend the DRM Strategies Conference & Expo, and Why?

DRM cuts across many different disciplines in content businesses, so the conference will appeal to a wide variety of attendees:

Media industry marketing executives, business development executives, and content product managers will learn about new ways to drive revenue from content through digital channels, the DRM and related technology that makes new business models possible, what's available now, and who is using it.

Content technology managers will learn to understand the technology of DRM, how it can be used to build innovative services, and how it can be integrated into content providers' technology infrastructures.

Intellectual property managers and attorneys will gain understanding of the tensions between DRM technology and copyright law and learn about the latest developments on that front.

Corporate security officers, security technologists, and librarians will find out how DRM can complement existing security technologies to give corporations greater control over distribution of information.

Security and compliance officers in financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, software and other industries will learn how DRM is becoming a component of solutions that help companies comply with laws and regulations about information access and integrity.

How Can I Become a Speaker at the DRM Strategies Conference & Expo?

We always encourage applications to speak at our DRM Strategies events, to ensure that we provide the best possible content to our attendees. To apply, please fill out the Jupiter Events Speaker Form at www.jupiterevents.com/speakerform.html, or send an email to Bill Rosenblatt, Conference Chair. We offer the following guidelines for submitting successful speaking proposals:

    • Please examine the conference program and specify which panel(s) you are applying for. We generally cannot except proposals without reference to specific panels.
    • Please note that most proposed stand-alone/solo sessions may be channeled into a panel format in order to give exposure and analysis of a wider variety of speakers and approaches. In fact, your overall chances of acceptance are greater if you are willing to participate on a panel.
    • If you see that a particular panel does not have a moderator listed, and you are interested in moderating, please feel free to propose being a moderator. Moderators will have some responsibility for speaker recruitment, augmented by other inbound proposals and the Conference Chair.
    • Please provide your relevant background and a brief summary of the point of view or aspect of the panel subject matter that you intend to present. This will help us determine your potential fit to the panel you are proposing.
    • If you represent a technology vendor, please demonstrate that you will not be giving a sales pitch. These are strictly forbidden.
    • Priority consideration is given to end-users/practitioners offering hands-on/project-based knowledge, customer facing implementation experience, unique and innovative perspectives, and broad industry learning. Precedence is also given to those speakers who demonstrate substantive, unfettered, no-holds-barred, real-world answers to specific, real-world questions (try to share the mistakes along with the successes!).
    • If you represent a PR firm or speakers' bureau, please note that we require personal confirmation from the actual speaker before we will put him/her on the program.
    • Decisions on all speakers are made by the Conference Chair in collaboration with the moderator of the panel in question.
