DRM Intellectual Property: Value, Risks, and Controversies
Since InterTrust's settlement of patent litigation with Microsoft last year, there has been a growing amount of activity and controversy surrounding intellectual property on DRM-related technology. Would-be DRM implementors are unsure about what patents they need to license for which purposes; new patent licensing schemes are hotly debated; DRM-related patent litigation is on the rise. The speakers on this panel are deeply embroiled in these issues and will address such questions as: what is the true value of DRM-related IP? Who should own it, and why? And what can the industry as a whole do to straighten out the current mess, so that quality DRM solutions can be deployed with minimum IP risk? DRM Overview and Tutorial - Part I
Digital rights management (DRM) is a complex topic. As a field, DRM exists at the confluence of digital media technology, content business models, corporate information policies and intellectual property law. There is much hype and misconception about many aspects of DRM, yet a broad understanding of DRM is necessary not only for getting full value out of the Jupitermedia's Digital Rights Management Strategies conference, but also for gaining insight into the future of networked digital media.
On Wednesday, July 27, we will present a 2 and 1/2-hour overview of DRM. This tutorial is a version of which has already been given internally at leading media and technology companies. The presenter is Bill Rosenblatt, the conference chair for Jupitermedia's Digital Rights Management Strategies 2005. Bill is president of GiantSteps Media Technology Strategies, a management consultancy; managing editor of the Jupitermedia Web site and e-mail newsletter DRMWatch.com; and author of Digital Rights Management: Business and Technology (John Wiley, 2001) as well as several white papers on DRM.
The DRM Overview and Tutorial will cover these topics:
History and background of DRM
DRM-enabled content business models
DRM in the corporate enterprise: policy and regulatory compliance
DRM technology components: identity, authentication, encryption, watermarking, rights specifications and more
DRM standards initiatives: decoding the alphabet soup
Digital copyright law developments: principles, legislation and court cases
Key vendors and the state of DRM market development
Trends and predictions
Attendees will come away from this overview and tutorial with a solid understanding of what DRM is (and what it isn't), what it's good for in both media and corporate enterprise applications, how well it actually works, what companies are actually using it for, who the key players in the market are, and how the market is likely to develop in the foreseeable future.
Whether you have heard the term DRM and want to know what it all means, or whether you are already familiar with certain aspects of it and want to round out your knowledge, the DRM Overview and Tutorial will satisfy your desire to reach beyond the hype into the substance of DRM.
