Willms Buhse joined CoreMedia in November 2003, where he is a member of the executive board and heads the product and marketing division. His responsibilities include global marketing and communication as well as product management for CoreMedia’s Smart Content Technology, which has been employed by over 100 customers such as Bertelsmann, Continental, DaimlerChrysler, Deutsche Telekom, Debitel, O2, EPCOS, NEC/Mitsubishi, Nokia, SEAT, T-Mobile, T-Online, Wincor Nixdorf, and the German government. CoreMedia is a Hamburg, Germany, based software company that develops standard solutions for content management systems, multi-channel content delivery, and digital rights management. CoreMedia’s principal investor ist Deutsche Telekom.
Mr. Buhse is author and editor of two books and has been speaking at about 80 conferences on the subject of digital distribution in the media industry. As interview partner for journalists and analysts, he has been quoted in Billboard magazine, Computerweek, Die Zeit, Frankfurter Allgemeine, International Herald Tribune, Musicweek, Music&Copyright, N-TV, Reuters, Spiegel, VDI Nachrichten and numerous research studies. Additionally, Mr. Buhse acted as advisor to the European Commission and several parliaments in the field of copyright legislation.
In early 2003, Willms Buhse was elected as Vice Chair for the Open Mobile Alliance Download and DRM Group (OMA DLDRM). This group released the first open DRM Standard, which is currently being implemented in many handsets and in operator networks (OMA DRM v1.0).
Prior to joining CoreMedia, Willms Buhse was employed by Bertelsmann for over five years, working at their worldwide headquarters in Gütersloh, Germany, in Hamburg, and in New York. In 1998, Mr. Buhse began as a technology consultant in Bertelsmann's New Technologies Group, from where he, was quickly promoted to assistant director of new technologies and strategy. During a four-year-long stay at BMG’s headquarters in New York City, he was co-founder of Bertelsmann’s Digital World Services division, a pioneer in the field of digital rights management (DRM). In various positions, including senior director of marketing and head of consulting, he has worked with clients such as 3, ATT, BMG, HP, Lycos, Matsushita, Napster, Orange, Universal and others.
Before joining Bertelsmann, Mr. Buhse was a consultant in technology and strategy projects at Roland Berger & Partner, Germany’s top management consultancy group, where he advised companies like Volkswagen and Deutsche Bahn. During a European Union Scholarship at the University of Madrid / Alcala de Henares, Mr. Buhse spent his time working in the field of information management in the Spanish airport industry.
Mr. Buhse holds degrees in industrial engineering (Dipl.-Ing.) and in management sciences (Dipl.-Oec.) from the University of Hanover, Germany and a Ph.D. in Economics from the Technical University in Munich. His research thesis is titled: Digital Rights Management vs. the DarkNet – Competitive Strategies and Business Models for the Music Industry.
