Martha joined Microsoft in 1996 and has held a variety of business and technical management positions, including managing strategic partner relations for the eBook team and running the Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL). She is now director of policy and strategy in the Windows Client Division, and her group focuses on digital rights management (DRM). She has been a member of the MPEG-21 committee since 2001.
After obtaining a degree in mathematics from Northeastern University, Martha began her professional career at IBM. She then joined Hewlett Packard to work on speech recognition, and later became active in the standards community, focusing on UNIX standards. After Hewlett Packard, Martha became the vice president of a small software and consulting firm, where she established and ran the leading POSIX compliance testing lab.
