Dr. Smith received his M. Phil and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University in 1994 and 1997, respectively. He is currently Chair of the ISO MPEG Multimedia Description Schemes (MDS) group and serves as co-Project Editor for MPEG-7 Multimedia Description Schemes. Dr. Smith was Program Co-Chair for ACM Multimedia 2003 and Area Chair for Multimedia Databases for IEEE Intl. Conf. on Multimedia and Expo (ICME) in 2002-2004. He was co-Chair of SPIE Internet Multimedia Management Systems conference 2000-2004. Dr. Smith is an Associate Editor of IEEE Trans. Multimedia, Editorial Board Member for ACM Computers in Entertainment, and Board Member for Kluwer Intl. Journal of Multimedia Tools and Applications. Dr. Smith was co-recipient of the inaugural Multimedia Prize Paper Award given to the best paper in the field of Multimedia published in the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia. He also received the Eliahu I. Jury award from Columbia University for outstanding achievement as a graduate student in the areas of systems communication or signal processing.
