Scott McNeil Executive Director Free Standards Group
Scott McNeil is Executive Director of the Free Standards Group.Through the efforts of McNeil, his team and numerous contributors, the Free Standards Group has emerged as the leading standards organization for Linux and open source software worldwide, with strong support from both the development community and IT industry. Since its incorporation in 2000, the Free Standards Group has released the Linux Standard Base (LSB) specification and test suite; the OpenI18N specification and test suite for internationalization; and the Linux Development Platform Specification (LDPS). More recently, the Free Standards Group has launched the LSB Certification program. As of January 2003, every major Linux distribution vendor had applied for, and achieved, LSB Certification for at least one of their products. An active member of the Linux and open source community for over seven years, Scott McNeil has previously held management positions at companies such as VA Linux and SuSE Linux.
Integration of diverse systems is listed as the biggest headache IT customers face. However, with the combination of open source software and free standards, IT customers are able to solve many of their interoperability and integration issues. Additionally, through free standards, organizations are able to remove many vendor dependencies while insuring against potentially debilitating variations in future versions of their infrastructure software. This talk will cover what standards large IT customers are demanding of their Linux and open source products, how Linux based standards (primarily LSB Certification) are moving beyond purely open source software, what problems the standards are addressing, and how you can influence and benefit from free standards development.
