Morning Keynote - Technology Evolves: e-business on demand |
| |
The IT industry is experiencing a tremendous transformation, with open standards based technologies from the open source community like Linux, XML-based Web services, and the Open Grid Services Architecture leading the way. IBM's strategy of e-business has evolved to e-business on demand, but still based on open standards based architectures. This new strategy allows businesses to become on demand - responsive to new challenges and opportunities, focused on core competencies, and employing new variable cost structures. The on demand business is supported by a highly resilient infrastructure that’s integrated, virtual and autonomic because it is built on open standards. This talk will explore this quickly changing landscape for business and IT and its implications.
Speaker:
Daniel A. Powers, Vice President, Grid Computing Strategy, IBM Corporation

Improving Enterprise database Performance On Linux (Track 2) |
| |
This paper describes a case study of world record TPC-C benchmark on ia64 Linux. The result was achieved by tuning OS performance features and by advanced compiler optimization. In this presentation, Saxena will present several OS features that improved TPC-C significantly, namely huge Translation Lookaside Buffer (TLB) page to reduce Data Translation Lookaside Buffer (DTLB) misses. This allows the database to use a large amount of shared memory and asynchronous I/O to accommodate a high amount of random I/O, without introducing the overhead of many I/O processes. Also covered will be OS optimizations that have been done by Intel, Redhat and the Linux community to the entire I/O subsystem, starting with block and scsi layer as well as storage device drivers. As a result of these works, a world record of TPC-C benchmark on a 4-way Intel Itanium-2 platform was published in November, 2002, a solid demonstration that Linux is far ready for enterprise class application.

Afternoon Keynote: The Evolution of the Virtual Environment, Where Does Linux Fit? |
| |
IDC has been examining the evolution of the virtual environment for quite a number of years. This session will examine IDC's definition of the virtual environment, its roots in techniques developed in the late 1970s, and how Windows, Unix and Linux can be deployed as platforms in the virtual environment.

Case Study: LabCorp Linux Rollout Replaces Legacy Unix (Track 2) |
| |
One of the world's largest clinical laboratory companies with annual revenues of approximately $2.6 billion, LabCorp performs diagnostic procedures on specimens from approximately 280,000 patients per day. The company operates 24 major laboratories and approximately 1300 patient service centers nationwide. LabCorp has over 26,000 employees and performs more than 4,000 clinical tests. The company has embarked on a project to replace legacy hardware running AT&T System V rel 4 with powerful Dell servers running Linux in a HA clustered environment. Attendees will learn from project manager Lisa Penland about the process of switching out the legacy hardware and porting a variety of applications. Lisa works in the Burlington, North Carolina complex, home of the Powell Laboratory Complex, which houses the firm's Center for Esoteric Testing, which uses a variety of technology to perform rare analyses.

How do you Manage Hundreds of Linux Systems Across your Enterprise and still have Time for Sleep? (Track 1) |
| |
Enterprise Linux deployments often begin as grass roots or departmental efforts. Unfortunately, these informal implementations do not easily scale to meet the needs of the enterprise. In order for Linux to succeed at the Enterprise level, it must easy to maintain hundreds or thousands of systems in a cost effective way. This session, organized around customer case studies, presents the issues and the evolving technical solutions for managing large numbers of Linux systems - servers and workstations -- across the enterprise.
