What Is Grid Computing?

Grid computing is a method of harnessing the power of many computers in a network to solve problems requiring a large number of processing cycles and involving huge amounts of data. So rather than using a network of computers simply to communicate and transfer data, grid computing taps the unused processor cycles of numerous — sometimes thousands of — computers.

Why Should I Care About Grid Computing?

Because Grid technology eventually will enable widespread access to a resource previously unavailable to all but a handful of researchers and scientists — virtually limitless processing power. Right now that compute power is being used primarily for cancer research and other medical projects requiring complex molecular analysis, as well as electronic design automation. Grid software also is being increasingly deployed in the financial services industry and corporate research and development departments.

But you don't have to tap into a global Grid to benefit from the technology. Indeed, some believe that Grid technology's biggest users may be those operations harnessing a small number of machines - perhaps 10 to 20 — in "cluster Grids." Workstations and servers in general utilize only a fraction of their capacity. Grid software can increase utilization rates, thus boosting productivity and ROI.

What Is Grid Computing Planet 2002 Conference & Expo?

Grid Computing Planet Conference & Expo Fall 2002 will provide the technical, strategic, and market information your organization needs to evaluate Grid and related technologies, select vendors and deploy solutions. The conference will also provide an educational forum for those who need to learn about Grid Computing technology as it takes root in the workplace and the marketplace.

What Are The Goals Of This Conference?

 • For the IT professional, the conference will explore the major Grid and related technologies and tools currently available, with a special focus on the Globus Toolkit and cluster installation and deployment.

 • For the businessperson and investor, the conference will inform them about the benefits of Grid technology in the corporate world, as well as Grid's potential as an area of investment.

Why Would I Want To Attend This Conference?

You will gain a comprehensive understanding about Grid computing — its evolution, current state and future — and related technologies. You will hear from organizations that have deployed Grid projects. You will hear from vendors who are offering Grid software and services. And you will also be able to network with fellow professionals who share your interest in Grid and related technologies.

What Will Attendees Get Out Of The Conference?

Technologist - will provide you and your team with the technical information you need to get started on Grid-related projects, including cluster or "campus" Grids, or to expand upon your current Grid efforts.

Business professional and investors - will provide you with market trends, analysis and case studies to help you evaluate Grid computing opportunities.
