Jupiter Research Insight: "Optimizing Spending, Staffing and Technology Selection in the Web Enterprise"
Jupiter Research has found that the key to making effective use of technology is often adopting an appropriate organization structure. All Internet technology is “business technology” and presents management challenges to many businesses. This session will look at recent trends in Web technology spending and staffing, highlight common weaknesses in enterprise Web site governance, and provide advice to help companies make good technology and operational decisions to drive business goals.

David Schatsky, Senior VP - Research, Jupiter Research

Morning Keynote Address: Keeping the Peace
We’ve all heard it before. Marketing complains that IT is holding them up. IT complains that business users can’t make up their minds. The CFO says the company can’t afford 15 projects. The CIO says the company can’t afford not to spend on IT. So where does the truth lie?
Somewhere in between.
The truth is that tight budgets and the need for speedy returns are forcing business units and IT to talk, encouraging creativity and pushing companies to be more efficient. With its ability to connect users to existing information and eliminate the “IT bottleneck”, content management has become a hot topic. Vignette’s Dave Shirk will discuss how content management can help you improve customer service, brand management, partner management and employee communication while driving improved business efficiency. He’ll point to standards and complementary technologies, such as portals and collaboration, which can aid your IT organization in meeting and exceeding the needs of marketing, HR, product development and sales, with a budget your CFO will approve.
Dave Shirk, Senior Vice President, Products and Strategy, Vignette Corporation

Content and the Customer: Managing Self Service Content
One area that stands to benefit most from effective content management is the call center. Having the right content on hand allows call center workers reduce talk times, callbacks and other related hassles thereby increasing productivity. Furthermore, the ability to swiftly navigate through content and customer information can result in new opportunities for cross selling and up selling. Increasingly customers are also enabled to service themselves given the right content resources, significantly deflecting the high cost of phone-based customer service.
- Should content management for call centers be integrated into the enterprise content management system?
- What content is most useful for customer self-service?
- What are the costs involved and how can companies measure ROI?

The State of Paid Content
One of the basic promises of content management is the ability to repurpose a single source for multiple uses, whether within a company (to drive down costs), or between companies (to manage a channel or drive revenues). But is there really gold in the archives?
U.S. consumer paid online content revenues will total $2.2 billion across all categories in 2003, and syndication will add another $400 million. Most content exchange deals are still for traffic or ad inventory rather than cash, and many third-party syndicators are desperately looking at corporate portals as customers.
- What could change this picture, and when?
- Which categories have the most near-term promise?
- How should content asset owners prioritize their investments in managing content in anticipation of this promise?

Content Management Deployment
Jupiter Research estimates that content management deployments are second in risk only to CRM initiatives. Executives have complained of rigid workflow and poor user interfaces, the need for high-cost technical intervention and severe cost overruns. This case study session will illustrate some important lessons about content management deployments, based on one company's experience. Attendees will gain valuable insight about platform selection, system design and general guidelines for successful implementation.
