Keynote: Understanding Microsoft in a Post-Trial World

Presented by David Schatsky, Senior Vice President - JupiterResearch

Microsoft in the twenty-first century is a different company than the startup of the 70's, the growth company of the 80's and the dominant software company of the 90's. It's leadership, role and mission statement have all changed dramatically since company battled the DOJ. This session will explore the structural organization; key competitors and partners; and major weaknesses or strengths of the company and provide a brief overview of the seven business units that make up Microsoft today.

9:00 A.M. - 10:00 A.M.
Implications of the Office and Windows Franchises

Presented by Joe Wilcox, Senior Analyst - JupiterResearch

Microsoft has embarked on a renewed integration strategy, using ties to Office and Windows to drive product sales from the five money-losing divisions. This session will explain how Microsoft is using its position on the desktop with Office 2003, Windows XP and forthcoming Windows Longhorn to drive sales of back-end server software. Microsoft also is in the process of tightly tying core "Whidbey" development tools and "Yukon" database components together and with Longhorn products. Similarly, Microsoft is repositioning Office as a friend end to back-end systems, such as enterprise resource planning or client relationship management. In the consumer market, the ties are designed to benefit Windows Media, MSN and Xbox.

Key questions:

  • What opportunities does Microsoft's integration strategy around Office and Windows create for partners? For competitors?
  • How will other Microsoft product groups benefit from their increased Office/Windows ties?  When will Longhorn REALLY ship and what are the implications of the Longhorn delay?
  • How will Microsoft counter Linux in the desktop and server markets?

10:00 A.M. - 11:00 A.M.
Understanding Microsoft's Other Five Business Units: Losing Money - but making it up in volume!

Presented by Michael Gartenberg, Vice President and Research Director - JupiterResearch

Server and Tools, Business Solutions, Home and Entertainment, MSN and Mobile and Embedded Devices make up the other five Microsoft divisions. Each has a track record of losing money. This session will provide insight as to why Microsoft still engages in these markets, despite the lack of apparent success, and how the company is utilizing past strategic tactics that may not work this time around.

Key questions:

  • Which strategies will Microsoft employ to drive unprofitable business efforts forward?
  • How dominant will Microsoft be in each of these five markets?
  • What spaces are strategic for Microsoft and which are only tactical?
  • How can partners and competitors navigate an environment clouded by Microsoft's murky strategic intent and leverage the opportunities created?
  • Can Microsoft compete with open source products that are priced well below Microsoft offerings?

11:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M.
