Day 1 (Pre-conference Workshops)
Monday, May 13, 2002*

This pre-conference day consists of two workshops - Nanotech 101 and Commercialization Of Nanotechnology. Please select one of the workshops below. While you may switch between workshops during the day, please keep in mind that each is created as day-long tutorials.
9:00am - 10:00am Registration
Workshop I: Nanotech 101 - A Basic Introduction (10:00am - 5:00pm)
Nanotechnology is being touted as a new revolution and "The Next Big Thing" - but in fact it is a field that has been developing for well over 15 years. Nanotech 101 is suitable for anyone wanting to answer the question "What is nanotechnology?" and "Where are the real opportunities in nanotechnology?" in order to create a foundation for formulating and building a nanotechnology-related business. The speakers will cover the basic science of nanotechnology and its building blocks, the types of nanotechnology that are ripe for commercialization today, and a peek into the future possibilities. With this information under the audience's collective belt, the attendees will break into small groups and will be lead through a structured brainstorming process to formulate innovative applications of nanotechnology and uncover key issues that will need to be addressed for nanotechnology to reach its full potential. The group that comes up with the best ideas will win a valuable prize for their work.
Moderator:
Scott Mize, Chairman of the Advisory Board, Nanotechnology Opportunity Report and Co-founder of AngstroVision, Inc.
10:00am - 11:15am Workshop I - Part I: The Basics - Back To School With Dr. Science
Truly understanding nanotechnology requires at least a basic understanding of the science and technology underlying it. In a lively session complete with visual aids, we'll go back to the classroom and learn the basics behind nanotechnology. The attendees will learn the key scientific underpinnings and building blocks of nanotechnology.
Paul Holister, Co-Author Of The Nanotechnology Opportunity Report™; Editor, TNT (Trends in Nanotechnology) Weekly
11:15am - 11:30am Break
11:30am - 12:45pm Workshop I - Part II: Current Commercialization Opportunities and the State of Nanotechnology Business
The recently released Nanotechnology Opportunity Report™ (NOR) showed that nanotechnology is not science fiction, but is here today in a wide variety of applications. The NOR also uncovered many interesting findings regarding the state of nanotechnology business today. Tim will provide an overview of the key findings, including what products are on the market now that use nanotechnology and the major areas of current opportunity.
Tim E. Harper, CEO, CMP Cientifica
12:45pm - 2:00pm Lunch
2:00pm - 3:15pm Molecular Nanotechnology: Definitions, Feasibility, Opportunities and Risks
Molecular Nanotechnology or MNT is currently research and development on the future ability to manufacture large, three dimensional objects inexpensively, and with atomic precision. This would lead to a discontinuous change in our relationship to molecules and matter, as fundamental as the way computing changed our relationship to bits and information. Although molecular manufacturing capability may be decades away, visions of replicating assemblers or "nanobots" capture the imagination of the media and the public - and spark considerable confusion and controversy. This session will address the definition, feasibility, timing, risks, and opportunities of molecular nanotechnology. It will also summarize MNT guidelines and safeguards co-developed by the Institute for Molecular Manufacturing and the Foresight Institute.
Neil Jacobstein, Chairman, The Institute for Molecular Manufacturing
3:15pm - 3:30pm Break
3:45pm - 5:00pm Workshop I - Part IV: Charting the Course for Nanotechnology
This will be an interactive, audience-participation session. The group will be briefly introduced to the scenario planning process, popularized by the Global Business Network. Using the knowledge gained in the previous sessions and this process, the audience will break into small groups facilitated by the presenters to brainstorm compelling possible applications and identify critical hurdles to the development of nanotechnology. At the end of the session, each small group will be invited to share an "elevator pitch" of their ideas with the whole audience. The presenters will award a valuable prize for the best ideas developed.
Steven Glapa, President, In Realis
Workshop II: Commercialization Of Nanotechnology (10:00am - 5:00pm)
This course is suitable for professionals needing to understand nanotechnology's commercialization stages and processes.

Experts in their respective fields discuss the commercialization process in corporate research settings, government labs and in university settings. Legal and intellectual property fundamentals will be addressed. Technology transfer basics of how to transfer research projects into a business setting will be fully discussed. Investors with expertise in early-stage investing will discuss their procedures for selecting and building Nanotech companies.

Each of the speakers has been carefully chosen for expertise in the various stages of commercialization.
Moderator:
LaMar A. Hill, Director of Business Development, The University at Albany, State University of New York: The Center for Advanced Thin Film Technology

10:00am - 10:45am Accelerating Nanotechnology Commercialization Through Industry University Government (IUG) Collaboration
Programs in New York State to support Research, Development and Commercialization of Nanotechnology will be discussed. A new paradigm for unprecedented IUG collaboration will be discussed. The efficacy of this new model vs. more traditional technology transfer efforts will be discussed.
LaMar A. Hill, Director of Business Development, The University at Albany, State University of New York: The Center for Advanced Thin Film Technology
10:45am - 11:15am Shortcutting Bottlenecks To Minimize Time to Market
Understanding the fundamental steps to commercialization and implementing parallel strategies to effect successful predisposition of timely or high risk tasks necessary for success can shave years off this process. A new strategy for a highly integrated support program will be discussed.
Pradeep Haldar Ph.D., MBA., Director of the Energy and Environmental Technology Applications Center
11:15am - 11:45am Break
11:45am - 12:15pm Financing Models and Strategies
A comprehensive review of several finance models to effect successful commercialization and profitability are explored and delineated. State and Federal grants, legislative initiatives, equity and debt financing and hybrid funding strategies will be discussed.
George Lee, President, Glimmerglass LLC
12:15pm - 12:45pm Case Study-Evident Technologies Accelerating Commercialization Of Nano-Crystals
