Morning Keynote Address: Making Tracks In The Digital World With an ever-changing competitive landscape, there has been significant
movement toward legal online music services (i.e., Napster, Apple, Real,
etc.). A number of factors are contributing to the viability of digital
music distribution; specifically (1) 5 major labels licensing substantial
portions of their catalogs for use in subscription services; (2) labels
are permitting CD burning; (3) labels are offering an a la carte
download-and-burn model for consumers; and furthermore, (4) the justice
department is on an active crusade to shut down illegal online pirate
sites. Do these dynamics really equal success for the future of digital
music distribution? What will be the key differentiators to the success
of these services?
Chris Gorog, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Roxio, Inc.
Creating Digital Music Commerce Roughly half the online population flocks to music-related websites each
month. Internet radio, promotional downloads, and file sharing all offer
consumers an abundance of free content choices, which leaves little
incentive to pay for music. What will make paid offerings more compelling?
How can product features support service tiers? What is the right price?
Will a la carte downloads short-circuit the development of subscription
services? Is there a profitable model for online CD sales?
