Senior Vice President, Communications
BeMusic
Paula Batson is Senior Vice President, Communications for BeMusic. Batson
oversees all communications for BeMusic, a direct to customer distributor of
music and entertainment products with 8 million subscribers and home to such
well-known brands as BMG Music Service and CDnow. She is responsible for
the company’s public relations strategy and market communications and plays
a key role in the company’s industry relations campaigns.
Prior to joining BeMusic, Batson was Vice President of Communications and
Industry Relations for myplay, Inc., where she led the communications and
corporate branding strategies for the highly visible digital Locker company.
She was also responsible for myplay’s label and industry relations, working
with trade groups such as the RIAA and NARM, artists such as Aimee Mann and
Willie Nelson and labels such as Artemis, Dreamworks and Hollywood Records.
Batson has dedicated her professional career to both the traditional music
business and the emerging music/technology sector. Prior to joining myplay,
she was Vice President of Communications for AT&T’s a2b music. Batson came
to a2b music from online music pioneer N2K, Inc, where she was the Senior
Vice President of Public Relations. At N2K, Inc., she spearheaded
communications for the company’s successful IPO; its launch of e-mod, the
first commercial digital downloading service; as well as the company’s music
web sites and Internet-only CD release from The Tragically Hip. She also
worked closely with the music industry to bring artist and label promotions
(with Lucinda Williams, Brooks and Dunn and Riyuichi Sakamoto) and events to
N2K in the early stages of Internet music.
Batson has held senior communications positions with the MCA Music
Entertainment Group (including the concert, distribution and music
publishing divisions), RCA and Columbia Records. In addition to corporate
public relations, she has been responsible for successful press campaigns
for numerous gold and multi-platinum selling artists, including Miles Davis,
Eurythmics, Willie Nelson, Wynonna and Lyle Lovett.
A graduate of Sarah Lawrence College, Batson is a member of the New York New
Media Association and a graduate of the Nashville Leadership Music Class of
1999. She is a frequent speaker at music and Internet conferences, including
