Michael Dorf
Founder
The Art Exchange

In 1986, at the age of 23, he started the Knitting Factory in the East Village of New York. The Knitting Factory has grown into a downtown institution with a globally recognized brand name. KnitMedia, which grew out of the club, is an entertainment company with a large record label & publishing group comprising of over 8 labels and 700 titles. Michael was the executive producer on over 200 of those titles. There exist two clubs today, one in Tribeca, New York and the other in Hollywood, California with discussions for a club in Paris sometime in the future. Dorf has been the producer of the New York Jazz Festival in New York for 12 years working with such sponsors as Bell Atlantic, Intel, Heineken, Texaco and others. Dorf has been able to create a plethora of strategic relationships and sponsorships for KnitMedia including co-founding the Digital Club Network and coining the title “Plug.in” for the conference. Michael Dorf has been profiled in Inc. Magazine’s fastest growing companies; New York Magazine named him part of “The Ten Most Influential New Yorkers”, and is a frequent speaker on the subject of music and new technology.

His current interest is to help in the rebuilding of Lower Manhattan and creating a center of culture, which can help in the exchange of ideas, arts, and the better side of humanity. Creating an 1500 capacity arts center at a time when the economic, political, and cultural momentum is pushing the world in another direction is the catalyst to build something “important that can change the landscape in NY for the better.” The Art Exchange, given its proximity to the Stock Exchange will open in the Fall of 2004.
