Jay Alan Samit
Senior Vice President Sony Corporation of America
As Senior Vice President, Sony Corporation of America (SCA), Jay Alan Samit is responsible for the development of new business models for the company, with a particular focus on launching Sony Connect, Sony's digital distribution service. As General Manager of this new company, Samit liaises with other Sony companies in the development of joint initiatives that fully capitalize on the depth and strength of Sony's hardware and content. With over 500,000 tracks, Connect launches in the US on May 4, 2004.
Prior to joining Sony, Samit was President of Digital Distribution & Development for EMI Recorded Music. Under Samit's guidance, the company broke new ground with its forays into custom compilations, ringtones, Internet radio, m-commerce and subscription business models. Samit championed digital download initiatives, and created company-wide policies that combated piracy and enabled artists to make significant gains in the online music space. Samit's aggressive move into media convergence and the digital distribution of music made New Media into a leading profit center for the company. This insight, along with his role as one of the leading authorities on new media, garnered Samit the Label Executive of the Year 2000, an award presented by Gavin.
Leveraging entertainment assets on the Internet was Samit's main responsibility as Vice President of Original Content for Universal Studios New Media Group. Samit successfully launched animalhouse.com, a profitable joint venture targeted to the online college community, and served as President during its first year.
A twenty-five year Internet veteran, Samit founded Jasmine Multimedia Publishing in 1981. During his 16-year leadership, the company produced and marketed more than 300 software titles, and developed key advances in music and video technologies for Microsoft, Apple, Intel, and IBM. He and his products received numerous awards, including Best Show Comdex; Best of RetailVision; Multimedia Producer Top 100; and the Newsweek Editor's Choice Award.
Among his many professional accomplishments, Samit was invited by President Clinton to the White House's Initiative for Education & Technology, and spearheaded the national effort to create Internet access for schools across the nation. Samit's collaboration with the White House spurred the creation of the National Education Technology Initiative (NETI). Samit also served as director of this non-profit organization dedicated to the goal of providing "universal access" to the Internet and computer technology for America's youth. He has also served as a consultant to the California State Legislature's Committee on Technology.
Samit teaches new media at the university and graduate school level and is a member of the Writer's Guild of America.
A recipient of the Presidential Fellowship, Samit graduated magna cum laude from UCLA in 1982.
