Keynote I: The Road Ahead
Speech recognition is widely recognized as a transformational technology.
Not only does speech technology make our use of the phone more productive
and pleasurable, it also provides the organizations that use it with an
extremely attractive ROI. If you are new to speech recognition and
text-to-speech (TTS) technologies or want a current perspective on the
evolution of speech, join SpeechWorks CEO Stuart Patterson for this industry
update. You'll learn about the ways in which corporations around the world
are using speech today, and get a glimpse into hot applications of the
not-to-distant future.

Speech Technology Core Concepts
As an open standard, VoiceXML truly leverages the knowledge and products
that the industry has developed around Advanced Speech Recognition (ASR),
text-to-speech (TTS), voice printing, the traditional Public Switched
Telephone Network (PSTN) and associated telephony interfaces as well as the
next generation network using technologies such as Voice Over IP (VoIP) and
Session Initiate Protocol (SIP). This session introduces attendees to the
technologies that are fundamental to understanding the platform environment
of the VoiceXML standard.
Speakers:
Hitesh Seth, Chief Technology Officer, ikigo, Inc.
Gene Eagle, Speech Solutions Architect, Intel

VoiceXML Technical Overview
This session provides a detailed technical introduction to the various components of the VoiceXML standard and its significance to the world of speech application development.
We will explore the various elements of the VoiceXML standard - prompts, forms/dialogs/menus, grammar development, telephony integration and modularization.
Speakers:
Pascal Deschenes, Software Developer, Core Speech Technologies, InfoSpace Speech Solutions
Jae H. Roh, VP Engineering, Plum Group

Introduction To SALT
SALT (Speech Application Language Tags) is an upcoming platform for building multimodal applications. SALT heavily focuses on building multimodal applications rather than pure telephony which has been so far the core focus area for the VoiceXML standard. This session provides a technical introduction to the semantics and usage scenarios of the SALT language. We will also review how SALT compares and fits in with VoiceXML.
Jon Nicponski, Director of Speech Evangelism, Microsoft

Integrating Call Centers With VoiceXML Applications: CCXML
The VoiceXML standard currently is focused primarily on providing semantics for representing conversational dialogs. CCXML (Call Control XML) fits in well as an XML-based markup language for call control support. It provides the much needed sophisticated event-based asynchronous call-control mechanism to a telephony platform based on VoiceXML. In this session, learn how VoiceXML and CCXML can be combined to improve effectiveness of your existing call center through automated self-service, reduce call times and integrate with your company’s Web infrastructure.

VoiceXML And Multimodal Development
The scope of technologies such as VoiceXML is slowly growing to include the world beyond telephony-based applications. Automated Speech based applications definitely have a huge benefit for application scenarios such as call-centers. However, it is an accepted fact that as end-users we are used to interactions which utilize multiple modalities. Speech is one of them; visual interaction is another key element. Applications which lean into the multi-modal world include mobile commerce, financial transactions, mobile rich content -delivery news, weather, sports, directions, etc. This session reviews some of the challenges involved in delivering multi-modal applications using VoiceXML and reviews the design and product approaches that are available.
Les Wilson, Multimodal Architect, Pervasive Computing Division, IBM Software Group

Development Tools For Building VoiceXML Applications
This "night school session" reviews the third party VoiceXML application development tools and software development kits (SDKs) that are available to aid development and testing of VoiceXML based components and applications. Illustrated through a number of interactive demonstrations, you will understand how you can use these tools to test and debug VoiceXML applications from your computer or a normal touch-tone phone.

VoiceXML For Managers (Part I)
This session offers an introduction to VoiceXML from the perspective of a business or technical manager. It will highlight the benefits that the technology can provide as well as outline the risks related to adopting the technology for use in production systems. The session will cover best practices for creating project estimates, managing milestones, building and training a development team, managing customer expectations and measuring success. The session will also provide ROI metrics that will help you to evaluate whether your company should look into VoiceXML as a viable technology.
Curtis Tuckey, Director of Development, Voice Technologies, Oracle Corp.

VoiceXML For Managers (Part II)
In part two of this session, we will discuss the
impact of VoiceXML on enterprise customers. In
particular, we will demonstrate how open
standards like XML and VoiceXML can be used
effectively with data to improve business processes
and deliver ROI that was previously unthinkable. We
will also provide a European perspective on the
implementation and applications of VoiceXML based
technologies.
