VUI & BEST PRACTICES TRACK

8:00am - 9:00amRegistration
9:00am - 10:00amKeynote II:
The Big Picture: Looking At The Future Of Voice

As we all know, VoiceXML has flourished, finding acceptance in the market and growing to a community of more than 50,000 developers in just a few short years. So, what's next? Where are the biggest Voice and Speech opportunities going to be, and what role will VoiceXML play in the future of computing?

In his keynote address, Ozzie Osborne, Vice-President, Segment Management for IBM Pervasive Computing, will discuss the past, present, and-- most importantly-- the future of VoiceXML. Osborne will emphasize the integral role speech technology will play in whole IT solutions, and discuss the approach voice and speech developers must take to thrive in the world of pervasive computing.
W.S. "Ozzie" Osborne, Vice President, Segment Management, IBM Pervasive Computing Division

10:00am - 10:15amBreak
10:15am - 11:15amWriting For The Ear
By now it's widely accepted that in writing a voice interface you should "write the way people talk". But what does that mean? What do VUI designers need to know to make their prompts clear, engaging and natural? This presentation teaches analytical tools for thinking about language, as used by broadcasters, screenwriters and others who have solved the problem of using words to reach an audience. Topics include Character, Diction (word choice and sentence structure) and Prosody (the "music" of speech).
Spencer Critchley, Partner, Palo Alto Media Group
11:15am - 12:15pmVUI Design Best Practices
Learn from experts the essential steps for building great sounding voice applications. This session answers key questions around Voice User Interface design such as – what should be speech enabled? How simple/complex should the grammar be? What conversational form should be used - directed dialogs/mixed dialogs or natural language like? When to use DTMF? When to use TTS? What are the best approaches for error handling? How to clear ambiguities in grammars?
Peter Leppik, Founder & CEO, Vocal Laboratories Inc.
Keith Rolle, Managing Partner, VoiceArchitects
12:15pm - 1:30pmLunch Break
1:30pm - 2:30pmDeveloping Better Grammars
Your speech application is as good as the grammar it supports. Developing efficient and modular grammars for your VoiceXML Application is a fundamental element in speech application development. This session reviews the standards that are being developed around ways of representing grammars and drills into the mechanisms of writing the grammars for VoiceXML application development. This session reviews various tools that are available for VoiceXML grammar development and illustrates the rules-of-thumb you can leverage in building effective grammars.
Kris Hopkins, CEO, Newfound Communications, Inc.
Peter Krogh, VUI Design Services
2:30pm - 3:30pmEffective Dialog Design
When it comes to presentation, the first impression that you present to the user is very key. In the world of Voice Applications, an easy flowing interaction with the user is very critical. Natural language based interaction can be very intuitive but it is an accepted fact that highly usable and easy to use interactions can be built by just using directed dialogs. This session presents the guidelines that you as a dialog designer should consider before you design your next conversational and interactive speech application.
Kevin Dowd, President, Brainhat Corporation
Mark Miller, Corporate Trainer & Author, VoiceXML: 10 Projects to Voice Enable Your Website
3:30pm - 4:30pmBest Practices In Integrating VoiceXML Applications With VoIP Networks
Voice over IP (VoIP) is a technology which allows voice data to leverage the Internet as a communication platform. VoIP networks and VoiceXML can be uniquely paired together, where VoiceXML applications can be executed over secure/private/public VoIP networks. This session reviews how VoIP and VoiceXML fit together by exploring how VoiceXML relates to existing Voice over IP standards including SIP, RTP, RTCP, RSVP, H.323, etc. This session will also cover some VoIP toolsets that you can use to develop and test your VoiceXML applications over the Internet backbone. Also we will review, benefits of these technologies in the enterprise, for worker mobility, for accessibility to enterprise information, for unification of multiple means and media of communication. The discussion is illustrated with case studies of IP telephony deployments, which provided key new functionality without compromising on telephony requirements.
Speakers:
Dr. Jack Jachner, CTO, Alcatel
Ron Lott, Market Segment Manager, IP Communications Market Development, Sun Microsystems, Inc.

10:15am - 11:15amSIs And VXML Service Providers - A Beautiful Marriage In Serving Vertical Markets
Serving specific markets take both scalability and very specialized knowledge. However, specialization limits ones ability to scale and requires focus in execution. This session will examine how VXML has changed the dynamic between SIs and Service providers and opened up the possibility of collaboration in providing both specialization and scale, resulting in new business models and services.
Alex Danyluk, Senior Director, Qwest Solutions Karen Mix Wilson, ACP Interactive
11:15am - 12:15pmEnabling Speech For Transportation
VoiceXML is being utilized in a powerful new way in the transportation industry to provide travelers with up-to-date traffic and weather information, road conditions, and transit schedules. This session will present the results and experience that has been gained through the deployment of two VoiceXML IVR systems in the transportation sector. The first case study will detail the 511 traveler information system which was deployed by the Utah Department of Transportation and developed by Tellme in three months. The second case study will detail the Talk-N-Ride bus schedule IVR system developed for the Denver Regional Transportation District by Immedient.
Debra Miller, Voice Interface Consultant, Immedient
12:15pm - 1:30pmLunch Break
1:30pm - 2:30pmVoiceXML Live! Demo Hour
See the power of speech first hand as developers show off their VoiceXML applications. This exciting and informative session will provide developers and vendors with the opportunity to demonstrate how VoiceXML is being applied to real world scenarios. Each presenter will have a maximum of 10 minutes. Join us for this exciting rapid-fire speech extravaganza.

2:30pm - 3:30pmCase Study: Answering The Call For Radio Stations
Radio Voodoo will present how they utilized the Qwest voice platform to offer a cost effective system that enables radio stations around the country to track and respond to listeners in real-time, a way that hasn’t been possible before now. Hear how Disney is using their service to reduce costs and offer better support for listeners calling their stations.
Nicholas Branstator, COO, RadioVoodoo
3:30pm - 4:30pmLessons Learned From Your First VoiceXML Project
The objective of this session is to get you started with VoiceXML application development for your company. The session sets up the foundation steps for your VoiceXML project by reviewing key aspects of the effort involved - assembling and training a project team, getting telephony connections, understanding what you should consider while either selecting an existing application for Voice enablement or building a new application, and setting up your Web application server for VoiceXML delivery. This session will provide you with valuable tips for selecting a third party Voice Service Provider or assembling your own VoiceXML Gateway to run your VoiceXML applications.
Eve Andersson, Visiting Professor of Computer Science, Galileo University
