Introduction to Wireless LANs
and the IEEE 802.11 Standard
Looking for a solid introduction to the applications and technologies of wireless LANs? This workshop will explore everything you need to know to take advantage of WLANs today while planning for the next steps in the evolution of WLAN systems. The session will cover:
WLAN basics: motivations, justifications, applications, and what users and network managers need to know about indoor radio communications
The IEEE 802.11 standard in detail, including both current specifications and major new additions now under development
A review of current products, including clients, access points, and software, along with a discussion of key features
Installing A Home WLAN
What's the number one reason people demand wireless networks at the office? Because they're so useful at home! But we're not all gurus -- and even the simplest home Wi-Fi setup is immensely easier when you have some networking background. This two-hour session will provide that, telling you how to get that Wi-Fi card, router, and broadband setup at home to play nicely together. We'll walk you through an actual SOHO WLAN setup; explain the fundamentals terms like DHCP, DMZ, ping, firewalls, and other possibly unfamiliar jargon; give you a basic understanding of how to secure things using WEP/WPA; and share tips and tricks to help optimize your data throughput and range.

Wireless LAN Design Seminar
If you're a wired LAN administrator or support technician tasked with implementing an 802.11 network in your workplace, this is the workshop for you. Focusing on the fundamental, practical problems involved in equipping and setting up a WLAN that works 'out of the box,' this session gives you the information you need to get it right the first time. Topics include:
WLAN Security Tutorial
This three-part, six-hour workshop is designed to give administrators of traditional and wireless LANs an overview of the security issues associated with WLANs and demonstrate basic and advanced tools and techniques to mitigate WLAN security risks. Attendees should have solid network administration experience and a basic working knowledge of WLANs. Prior security knowledge is not required. Instructors: Diana Kelley, Security Strategist, Computer Associates International, Inc. Lisa Phifer, Vice President, Core Competence, Inc.
10:00am - 12:00pm
Part 1: Foundations
The initial portion of the workshop presents an overview of security issues encountered during WLAN deployment and explains aspects of 802.11 that are germane to security. Learn first-hand what common vulnerabilities like spoofing and eavesdropping really expose. Get a handle on less-publicized but equally worrisome threats like password capture and flood attacks. Instructors will use stumblers, analyzers, and intrusion detection tools to illustrate risks and show how such tools can help you protect your own wireless network.

Part 2 Building Private WLANs
Students in Part 2 will be expected to be familiar with the contents of Part 1. In order to participate in hands-on exercises, students must bring their own laptop and 802.11 NIC.
The second part of this workshop builds on the information presented during Part 1. It provides a series of steps or lessons to guide administrators in creating a private WLAN that is sufficiently secure for its intended purpose. Students will be able to participate in hands-on exercises designed to provide increasing levels of wireless privacy (WEP, WPA/TKIP, VPN encryption). Instructors will provide planning and configuration tips to help administrators avoid some common WLAN security and privacy pitfalls.

Afternoon Break
3:15pm - 5:15pm
Part 3: Stronger Access Controls
Students in Part 3 will be expected to be familiar with the contents of Parts 1 and 2. To participate in 802.1X exercises, students must have their own 802.11 NICs and laptops that run Windows XP or client software capable of supporting EAP-TLS.
The third part of this workshop builds on the information presented during Part 2, adding incrementally-stronger access control measures (MAC lists, SSL portals, 802.1X port access controls). Students will be able to participate in hands-on exercises designed to lock down WLAN access more tightly, culminating in detailed discussion of 802.1X, certificate vs. password authentication, EAP type selection, AAA server integration, and how to choose security measures that fit your business. Session concludes with a general-purpose "Security Deployment Checklist" for WLAN planners and administrators.
