TRACK A
Wi-Fi Business Perspectives

10:00am - 11:00am Wi-Fi for Profit: Can Hotspots Make Money?
Seventy percent of online consumers surveyed by Jupiter Research are aware of public hotspots, but only 6% have used one - and only 1% has paid for the privilege. Moreover, one-third claimed that they would never use a public hotspot, and another one-third stated that they would never pay for such a service. Service providers ranging from more traditional cellular and DSL providers to pure WISP's are building out infrastructure with plans to profit. This session will explore a number of business models for public Wi-Fi access as well as tactics being used to drive profitability.
Moderator:
Julie Ask, Research Director, Jupiter Research
Speakers:
Flavio Gomes, CEO and Managing Director, LogiSense Corporation
Steve Harmsen, VP Corporate Development, STSN
Sean O'Mahony, President & CEO, FatPort Corp.
11:00am - 11:30am Morning Break
11:30am - 12:30pm Mesh Architectures: Cutting the cost of WLAN deployment
An oft-cited advantage of wireless LANs over traditional wired ones is lower cost, due to a reduction in the amount of cable that needs to be pulled through walls, ceilings, and ducts. Yet in a 'traditional' WLAN, every access point requires its wired connection to the core network. In mesh topologies, network hardware elements (access points, or wireless routers, depending on the solution in question) communicate with each other via RF, reducing the number of wiring drops to a handful. We'll put vendors of such systems on the stand to make their case, and see what the companies behind the ever-successful star topology of access point/client WLANs have to say in rebuttal.
Moderator:
Eric Griffith, Managing Editor, Wi-Fi Planet.com
Speakers:
Phil Belanger, Vice President, Marketing, BelAir Networks
Frederick Harris, Director of Marketing, FireTide
Doug Huemme, Director of Marketing, Strix Systems
Lynn Lucas, Director of Product Marketing, Proxim Corporation

12:30pm - 2:30pm Lunch Break

2:30pm - 3:30pm Managing WLANs: The problems and the paybacks
According to a recent Jupiter Research Executive Survey, WLAN deployments are growing, with about one-third of enterprises expecting to have at least 20% of their employees on a WLAN by the end of 2003 -- up from one-fifth in 2002. As WLAN's evolve from "nice-to-have," small scale deployments in common areas to an enabler of enterprise-critical applications, the business requirements for WLAN management and security will escalate. This session will explore the evolving needs and priorities of enterprises for WLAN management, the available solutions, and the benefits.
Moderator:
Julie Ask, Research Director, Jupiter Research
Speakers:
Sumit Deshpande, Vice President, Computer Associates International
Andris Dindzans, Director of Product Management, Trapeze Networks
Brad Noblet, Director of Technical Services, Computing Services, Dartmouth College
Luc Roy, Senior Director, Product Management, Chantry Networks

3:30pm - 4:00pm Afternoon Break

4:00pm - 5:00pm Painting the Town Wi-Fi
Community networks (built by volunteer-enthusiasts) have been around as long as Wi-Fi. But a different kind of community Wi-Fi network is beginning to catch on all over: networks built by municipalities for the benefit of municipalities. Network usage may be by any combination of residents, visitors, and governmental and public service workers. Goals range from simple public amenity to facilitating public safety communications to generating municipal revenue.

In this session, we'll explore the hows and whys of a network built last year to cover the entire resort portion of Whistler, BC, a small mountain town that’s rapidly growing into a premiere ski venue. Nice idea to have the convenience and allure of Wi-Fi connectivity for winter visitors? Sure. But an equally important goal for Whistler is to make money for the town. Those responsible for the conception and creation of Whistler's Yodel network will detail it all—the problems, the solutions, and the current state of success.
Moderator:
Brian Sharwood, Principal, SeaBoard Group
Speakers:
Keith Borg, Director Business Development, V-Link Incorporated
John Rae, Manager Strategic Alliances/Resort Municipality of Whistler, BC and Vice President Marketing, Yodel Enterprises
Pierre Trudeau, CTO and Founder, Colubris Networks, Inc.

5:00pm - 6:00pm Reception on the Expo Hall Floor Sponsored by InterDigital

TRACK B
Technology Topics

10:00am - 11:00am Making A Point: Technologies, products, and design strategies for access points
Tasked with nimbly sprinting between users while speaking multiple dialects of the 802.11 protocol across multiple equipment types and frequencies, the access point (AP) does the heavy lifting within a wireless network. Operators are learning that much of the performance and profitability of a Wi-Fi system hinges on the AP's range, manageability, and ability to support large numbers of users in non-ideal environments. In this session, we'll explore the design strategies, chip sets, and technologies used to produce equipment that meets these exceptional performance requirements.
Moderator:
Lee Goldberg, Senior Technical Editor, analogZONE
Speakers:
Nick Finamore, President and CEO, Engim, Inc.
John McQuilter, Principal, Spectrum Management
Dr. Jim S. Wight, Principal Architect, IceFyre Semiconductor
11:00am - 11:30am Morning Break
11:30am - 12:30pm High-Performance Wi-Fi Systems
With network performance, as with chocolate, more is never enough. Wireless LANs in particular have long been constrained by limited throughput and range, but those days are coming to an end. While we will likely wait for years for 802.11n to deliver a standard for Wi-Fi speeds over 100 Mbps, companies are today announcing enhancements that use drafts of standards, proprietary tweaks, or fancy antenna technology to achieve performance at or approaching these levels. Learn from vendors how they achieve these results, how you can best put such systems to use -- and whether you should or not.
Moderator:
Jesse Frankel, Director of Systems Engineering, AirMagnet
Speakers:
Robert Buckley, Vice President, Engineering, Motia, Inc.
Steve Dellinger, Product Manager, Atheros Communications
Dr. Jim S. Wight, Principal Architect, IceFyre Semiconductor

12:30pm - 2:30pm Lunch Break

2:30pm - 3:30pm You Can Run But You Can't Hide: Location-based WLAN security
For enterprises to reap the rewards of wireless, they must be able to see exactly how users are using the air and govern how this precious medium is utilized. Location tracking has emerged as an essential component of enterprise WLAN security. With this functionality, enterprises can better handle rogue devices, identify the location of attackers, and provide better access control using geography-based security policies. In this session, speakers describe various location tracking technologies, including closest AP, RF triangulation, and RF fingerprinting ,illustrating the practical benefits of each. A case study is included to show how a branch of the U.S. military is securing its wireless infrastructure by employing location-based physical perimeter security, stopping wireless attacks and accidental associations by outsiders.
Speakers:
Bob Friday, Chief Scientist, Airespace Inc.
Michael Maggio, President and CEO, Newbury Networks

3:30pm - 4:00pm Afternoon Break

4:00pm - 5:00pm Road Warriors on Trojan Horses: Protecting wireless users in public spaces
In today's 24/7 global business environment, wireless technologies increase business productivity by letting workers connect to the Internet from nearly anywhere, but careless hotspot use invites corporate network compromise. What can be done to prevent employees at public hotspots from posing unacceptable security risks? In this session, panelists discuss enterprise security requirements for public hotspot use and options for extending WLAN security from the enterprise to hotspots, including both traditional measures like VPNs and emerging technologies like 802.1x.
Moderator:
Lisa Phifer, Vice President, Core Competence, Inc.
Speakers:
Tim Allwine, Vice President - Product Management & Development, VeriSign
Rohit Khetrapal, President, Perfigo Inc.
Robert Markovich, President, Network Chemistry
