Cityfying Wi-Fi: A Vision for Urban WLAN Deployment
Pundits tell us that Wi-Fi is the greatest thing since sliced bread, and will do anything asked of it. Other pundits assure us that Wi-Fi is an inferior technology, and will only serve as a stop-gap until some as-yet-to-materialize technology [favorite futureware here] arrives and really gets the job done. At issue in this regard is the increasingly important question of urban wireless "clouds," for which some consider current 802.11 technologies inadequate. Members of this panel, on the other hand, see a world in which different wireless technologies work in concert to create an efficient and effective urban network.

"N" Wars - The Struggle to Define the 802.11n Standard
The upcoming 802.11n standard promises to be one of the most exciting additions to 802.11 ever - performance above 500 Mbps is actively being discussed, along with enhanced range as well. But, as is usually the case, there are many different technical opinions and proposals as to what form this standard should ultimately take. Will politics delay .11n? What are the key technical points of disagreement? When will we see the products? This session has the answers.

Wireless Solutions: Who Makes the Cut?
Users continue to face the difficult challenge of choosing the right solution for their enterprise WiFi network. While there are a variety of options available, many questions arise about the quality of the wireless solutions on the market. Users want to know how solutions rate when compared, what metrics to use, what tools are available and how the tools are used by vendors, reviewers and end users.
The proposed panel consists of a team of experts in the WiFi testing arena who will discuss the parameters required to ensure a WiFi solution that works. Panel members will also address and debate wireless specific functions that are central to the use of mission critical applications on a WiFi infrastructure. Topics to be discussed include but are not limited to: performance, roaming, range, QoS and security.

Solving the Least-Common-Denominator Problem
Part of the popularity enjoyed today by 54Mbps 802.11g network equipment is its backwards compatibility with the older, slower, and more ubiquitous 802.11b standard. The problem is, when you have a mixed-mode network, running both 11b and 11g clients, the faster network gets dragged down in throughput speed - way down. Recent tests have show that the drop is perhaps even worse than expected. It's like driving in a tunnel: even if 11g is capable of going faster, it can't when it's stuck behind the slower traffic in front.
We'll hear from chipmakers and equipment vendors working to solve this problem, so the speeds needed for everything from voice traffic to video streaming will be available even when slower client systems are using the network -- because, lets face it, there are millions of 802.11b clients around, and they're not going away any time soon.

Mobile Influenza: The Rise of Worms, Viruses, and Intrusions on Wireless Devices
Hackers armed with new attack tools like AirJack, AirSnarf, BlueJack, Hunter_Killer, LeapCrack, and PEAP exploits are launching attacks on networks that a year ago were said to be unbreakable. A new breed of worms, viruses, and Trojan horses has also emerged to prey specifically on wireless devices. Wireless devices are an ideal target and carrier for such malware due to their inherent mobility and general lack of security, and hackers are keen to exploit their weaknesses. Presenters will review the latest hacker initiatives in this dynamic arena (with emphasis of 802.11 devices), currently available countermeasures (including protection from MiTM and DoS attacks), and the likely evolution of attacks and defenses.

Mobile Wireless Security: Beware of the Road Warrior
Three trends threaten to collide and blow a hole in corporate data security: the growing use of mobile computing devices to access corporate networks; the rapid rise of wireless connections used for mobile connectivity; and, ironically, the steady improvement of security within the enterprise. As more and more employees access the enterprise network from remote locations using laptops and handheld devices communicating over public networks, over wired and wireless links, the opportunity for compromise and theft of data, via those links and devices, dramatically increases.
Panelists will discuss practical defensive measures that organizations can implement to deflect attacks now being used to poke holes in the enterprise security perimeter. Topics will include tips and tools for improving the safety of connections from hotels and hot spots, cost-effective-but-safe methods of offering guest WLAN access, and methods for maintaining security for mobile devices that roam between 2.5G and 3.5G networks and enterprise Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi hot spots.

WPA2 Is Finally Here - Can We Ditch Our VPN?
Almost as soon as wireless LANs burst onto the scene, it became clear that the original WEP standard was full of security holes, forcing enterprise network managers to deploy VPNs to safeguard wireless data. Those days may be over, thanks to new developments like 802.1x, 802.11i, and the newest version of Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA2). Or are they?
Standards organizations, wireless equipment manufacturers, and security vendors have been promoting different security solutions to the same WLAN vulnerability issues. Which approach is best for you? In this session, panelists will debate the purpose, best use, and costs associated with alternative WLAN security approaches, focusing on WPA2 vs. VPN vs. multi-layered approaches that combine these two.

Gearing Up for VoWLAN
Wired networks have been business bedrock for a couple of decades now, but it took the better part of those years for those data networks to win on a significant role as a platform for a company's voice needs. By contrast, that convergence is happing on a greatly accelerated timetable with Wi-Fi networks. Reason: Wireless mobility.
However, bandwidth constraintsamong other technical issuesmake the voice/data convergence a challenging one for WLANs. Soon to further complicate the mix is cellular voice communication. So, what's needed today to create a voice-capable Wi-Fi LAN? Our group of seasoned experts delves into all the corners and gives you a blueprint for VoWLAN success.

Progress Report: The State of Seamless Mobility
Practically from the moment that voice over Wi-Fi became a practical reality, industry visionaries have been looking ahead to ways of moving freely among the various kinds of networks we have at our disposal in different contexts.
Depending on who you talk to, though, 'seamless mobility' can mean anything from smooth roaming across access points, or subnets, within a WLAN to cosmic telephonic connectivity to whatever network happens to be present, regardless of technology. Naturally, there are plenty of in-between approaches bent on linking VoWLAN to some flavor of cellular service, some carrier-centric, some enterprise-centric.
In terms of achieving these visions, we are at the place where proprietary solutions are beginning to morph into standards-based approaches. Further, semi-autonomous technologies like SIP and 'presence' are beginning to play an increasingly important role. Our expert panelists bring us up to date on a variety of solutions and initiatives.

Dual-Mode Hardware and Advanced Telephony Applications
Seamless mobility (see above) of course requires hardware equipped to communicate with multiple radio technologies. Actually, some handheld computers and PDAs have had these capabilities for a while now, and dual-mode telephone handsets are upon us, with more on the way. Now, the challenge shifts to the network and service-provider side of the equation. And what will such service look like to the user? Developers are working hard to create applications that will port the advanced features we've become accustomed to in up-to-date enterprise phone systems to the unwired wide, wide world. Where are we in the march to multi-mode hardware and advanced applications? Will it all work? When? Our panelists share their insider insights.

Wi-Fi Telephony and the Future of Roaming
Pundits have long agreed that universal roaming would be a major success factor for public access Wi-Fi were it ever to come to pass. Yet progress toward this goal has been slow, despite an existing business model (the cellular phone industry) and a large number of companies creating equipment and services to enable Wi-Fi roaming.
What's missing? Customer motivation, market drive, or, to put it another way, a 'killer application.' Once operators smell a genuine, revenue-producing driver, it's a good bet that the obstacles to building the business structures necessary for roaming will quickly disappear.
Might Wi-Fi telephony provide this killer app? Will it create significant investment opportunities? What is the value proposition? How will the networks function? How will the business relationships operate? Our panel will provide answers to these and other hot questions.

Wi-Fi Healthcare Revolution: The Hospital
In no other vertical industry has Wi-Fi brought so much fundamental change than in healthcare. Wi-Fi is enabling hospitals and other medical institutions to handle increasing volumes of information by providing granular data to locations that need it-and do it all at the speed that critical care demands.
Today's leading healthcare institutions are going far beyond the simple un-tethering of traditional medical record terminals. When applied strategically, Wi-Fi is enabling innovative workflow improvements, better resource utilization, improving patient safety, and broader instant knowledge sharing.
Wi-Fi is not the only technological force enabling change. RFID, for example, works with Wi-Fi and applications to track events, personnel, and valuable medical equipment, linking them all in healthcare's evolving wireless network environment.
Even as Wi-Fi solves old problems, from lowering costs to delivering better service, it also presents new challenges, such as:
- RF policy administration
- Bandwidth allocation
- Privacy and security concerns
- New fault tolerance requirements
- Finding the true cost-benefit justification
- Integration and planning, as new technologies meet old
This panel discussion will provide a snapshot of issues and best practices for a wireless healthcare environment. This environment is forcing change on healthcare itself at many levels, from the patient-doctor interaction to the traditional view of IT in hospitals, and, under HIPAA, the way healthcare is governed by the law.

Wi-Fi Healthcare Revolution: Data To Go -- Always Available & Connected
The Internet in general and Wi-Fi especially enable better, faster delivery of health care at a lower cost. Health care cannot stop when a doctor or nurse leaves the clinic to visit a patient. The insurance company's health care inspector must also remain connected. Wi-Fi local and wide area networks are involved, from wireless LANs at home, hotspots, and enterprise class wireless networks in hospitals, clinics, offices, labs, and other interested institutions. Gaps in the Wi-Fi cloud are filled in with dialup, cellular service, and other technologies. The panel will address the constituent elements associated with the preservation of identity, the propagation of trust, and compliance through various governance models.

WiMAX Demystified
Much has been written about WiMAX (an emerging suite of standards, based on IEEE 802.16 and ETSI HiperMAN, for fixed-portable-mobile broadband access) and the impact it will have on the broadband access market and the types of services delivered by ILECs, mobile operators, CLECs and ISPs.
Amid this healthy dialogue, there is considerable confusion about the technology, how WiMAX differs from 802.16, and the different versions of the standard. This presentation will cut through the confusion and hype to provide an educational, objective overview of the WiMAX solution as it applies to different operators such as fixed, WISP, and cellular.
The discussion will highlight the architectural view and the high throughput packet data network radio capable of supporting bursty and isochronous applications such as Voice over IP and the advantages this
brings to service providers. It will also address the open network architecture supporting standard NMS and multi radio network support. Finally, the presentation will highlight the timeline for conformance and interoperability testing and certification, and detail the opportunities for service providers to leverage WiMAX in their network service offerings.
