OSS for Hotspots: From A to R
The technical underpinnings of a hotspot have everything to do with how efficiently and effectively it operates, both as a standalone communications node and as part of a larger network. Authentication, security, backhaul provisioning, accounting, billing and many other vital operational functions rest on the Operations Support System.
In today's Wi-Fi market, hotspot operators can construct their own OSS from available equipment and services, or outsource it to dedicated providers. In either case, understanding the fundamental needs and
choices is essential.
But when the business model expands to embrace roaming, the OSS challenge takes a quantum leap upward. To interact in an automated way with other networks—which of course have their own OSSs—back-end systems
require additional flexibility and added components.
Both WEP and WPA are based on RC4, an encryption algorithm that falls short of DoD security requirements. In DoD environments, 3DES or the newer AES algorithms are required to encrypt layer two traffic. Dr. Jim Pilgrim will examine these more stringent DoD WLAN security needs and available solution elements. Speaker: Dr. Jim Pilgrim, Sr. Director of Product Management, 3e Technologies International
Stories From The Trenches: WLAN Security Case Studies
Companies require airtight security solutions for employees accessing corporate data no matter where they are--in the office, at the airport, or working from home. Speakers in this session will present several real-life case studies to illustrate the process, issues, policies, guidelines and architectures behind secure WLAN deployments. Learn first-hand from those who have been there how to safeguard business resources when deploying wireless networks, large and small. Speakers: Dave Juitt, CTO, Chief Security Architect, Bluesocket Inc. Bo Mendenhall, Principal Information Security Analyst, University Of Utah Health Sciences Center Ulrich Wiedmann, VP of Software Development, Wireless Security Corporation
VC Roundtable
To an almost miraculous degree Wi-Fi has been spared the drought of capital under which most high-tech industries suffered for the past three years. It has been the bright star of technology fundingthe place where VCs were willing, even eager, to invest. In this session a panel of leading technology venture capitalists discuss today's hot investments in 802.11 and related wireless technologies. Moderator: Craig J. Mathias, Principal, Farpoint Group Speakers: Eric Lewis, Executive Director, Walker Ventures Pascal Luck, Managing Director, Core Capital Partners Lawrence M. Macks, General Partner, Boulder Ventures Tom Scholl, Partner, Novak Biddle Venture Partners
Extending Wi-Fi's Role in the Digital Home: Selling Consumers on 802.11
As of the end of 2002, about seven percent of broadband households in the US had a home network that number will grow to 14% by the end of 2004. Broadband providers, PC OEMs, and makers of consumer electronics are joining networking equipment manufacturers to entice consumers to extend connectivity beyond the primary PC.
How do consumers view home networking today? What challenges does WiFi face from wired networking technologies? What are the drivers for a connected digital home? Speaker: Michael Gartenberg, Vice President & Research Director, JupiterResearch
