HOTSPOT CENTRAL

10:00am - 11:00am New Network Architectures for Hotspots
While you can still create a small hotspot by little more than plugging an access point into a DSL line, most hotspots installations have gone far beyond this plug and play approach. Dealing with multiple locations, multiple users, mixed public and private network access, and multiple methods of payment and authentication requires specialized equipment and services. Furthermore, coverage of large, complex spaces challenges the capabilities of traditional equipment. Fortunately, new architectures (such as meshes and grids), new antenna technologies, and new centralized systems for managing the increasingly complex hardware deployments are appearing to help hotspot businesses continue to push the envelope. This session will highlight some of the most promising new technologies that will help put the hot in hotspot.

4:00pm - 5:00pm OSS for Hotspots: From A to R
The technical underpinnings of a hotspot have everything to do with how efficiently and effectively it operates, both as a standalone communications node and as part of a larger network. Authentication, security, backhaul provisioning, accounting, billing and many other vital operational functions rest on the Operations Support System.

In today's Wi-Fi market, hotspot operators can construct their own OSS from available equipment and services, or outsource it to dedicated providers. In either case, understanding the fundamental needs and choices is essential.

But when the business model expands to embrace roaming, the OSS challenge takes a quantum leap upward. To interact in an automated way with other networks—which of course have their own OSSs—back-end systems require additional flexibility and added components.

This session explains the basics of a robust hotspot back-end, and explores additional systems and services need to facilitate bilateral and multilateral roaming.

SECURING THE WLAN

10:00am - 11:00am Surviving the Transition from WEP to WPA to 802.11i
Today, WPA is fast replacing WEP as the dominant wireless security protocol. Soon, 802.11i and WPA2 will further improve the level of standards-based wireless security. But many companies question why, when, and how to make this transition. And how long will customers have to live with WEP, WPA, WPA2, and 802.11i under the same roof? This session examines the real differences between WEP, WPA, WPA2, and 802.11i. It explains the real benefits of upgrading, how peaceful coexistence can be accomplished in mixed-mode networks, and suggests best practices to survive this security evolution.

11:30am - 12:30pm Solving Unique Challenges: VoWLAN and DoD Security Requirements
Certain networking environments demand more innovative or rigorous WLAN security measures. This session will examine two such cases:

WPA resolves security issues for most enterprise data applications, but what about voice and other multi-media applications? Will WPA address the latency, fast AP-to-AP handoffs, and other issues required to support VoWLAN? Pierre Trudeau will analyze WPA and 802.11i's strengths and weaknesses for VoIP applications and discuss how SIP handles roaming.
Speaker:
Pierre Trudeau, CTO and Founder, Colubris Networks, Inc.

Both WEP and WPA are based on RC4, an encryption algorithm that falls short of DoD security requirements. In DoD environments, 3DES or the newer AES algorithms are required to encrypt layer two traffic. Dr. Jim Pilgrim will examine these more stringent DoD WLAN security needs and available solution elements.

4:00pm - 5:00pm Teaching WLANs to Speak Cellular
WLAN deployments are rapidly evolving from their computing-centric roots to a mobility-centric environment. As this transition takes place, the coexistence and/or integration of WLAN and cellular networks will bring unique opportunities and challenges. Innovations in Smart Radio Resource Management and Smart Antenna technologies will be a catalyst in driving this migration by maximizing real-life WLAN performance.

By treating access points as a cohesive system and deploying network middleware, one can improve wireless LAN performance to mimic cellular. Radio Resource Management middleware dynamically manages power, frequency, access method, and data rate, which results in increased capacity, higher QOS, fair assignment of capabilities, and contiguous coverage. These benefits apply to public hotspots, enterprise deployments, and SOHO installations, and solutions can be retrofitted in installed networks.

Smart Antennas in WLAN devices provide a high gain steerable beam to the desired signal and away from interferences, significantly improving signal strength, reducing noise and allowing high rate communications at lower power levels. Smart antennas further increase user satisfaction with fewer dropped connections, improved coverage, higher data rates, better multimedia services and longer battery life. Low cost solutions are proven and available for implementation in existing architectures today.
