Barbara Nelson is Director of Advanced Technology at iPass, where she is responsible for researching new technologies for incorporation into the iPass product offering. Current research areas include enabling roaming access on wireless networks, integration with a broad range of endpoint policy products, and 802.1x-based authentication methods. Prior to leading the advanced technology group, Barbara was the architect for the iPassConnect(tm) client, an award winning remote access client that seamlessly integrates a wide variety of connectivity options (wi-fi, dial, GSM etc.) with rich policy management.
Barbara has more than 20 years of engineering experience in voice and data communications, mobile agents, and international communications standards. She joined iPass in September 2002 after serving as a senior architect at Extricity (a B2B product vendor). Before Extricity, Barbara spent seven years at General Magic, developing a patented mobile agent platform, and building a carrier-based service including voice user interface (VUI) and graphic user interface (GUI) software. Before General Magic, Barbara spent 7 years at Retix, a software company developing platform-independent solutions for OSI protocols. While at Retix, Barbara chaired the X.400 Special Interest Group at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Barbara holds a bachelor's degree with honors in computer science from University College Dublin, Ireland.
